Level Crossing Safety Funding: $1M Grants Open for Councils
Regional councils across NSW, including in the Northern Rivers, can now apply for level crossing safety funding under a new $1 million grant program to improve roads approaching rail crossings.
The 2026–27 Level Crossing Improvement Program – Regional Council Minor Works supports practical upgrades such as vegetation removal, warning signage, improved lighting, line marking and minor road realignments designed to reduce crash risks.
Transport for NSW says more than 1300 level crossings exist on public roads statewide, making safety improvements a priority for regional communities.
Chief of the Centres for Road Safety and Maritime Safety Bernard Carlon said councils manage about 90 per cent of NSW roads, highlighting the importance of local partnerships in improving safety outcomes.
In 2025, the program delivered $1.17 million across 21 projects that upgraded safety at 81 crossings, including resurfacing works, vegetation clearing and shoulder improvements.
The funding forms part of the broader NSW Level Crossing Improvement Program, which will receive $7.5 million in 2026–27 for infrastructure upgrades, new technology trials and community awareness campaigns.
Northern Rivers councils with public rail crossings are eligible to apply before 20 May 2026.
Authorities are reminding motorists and pedestrians to remain alert and follow warning signals at all level crossings, even where upgrades are underway.
