Second Hand Saturday keeps items out of landfill

Tweed households encouraged to register to host a garage sale this November

The North Coast’s biggest day of garage sales – Second Hand Saturday – is back stronger than ever this year with not one but two event dates to choose from this November.

Hosted by Council and North East Waste, residents are encouraged to hold a garage sale on either Saturday 19 November or Saturday 26 November (or both).

In the past, approximately 200 Tweed households have been involved in the event each year, with more than 800 participants across the Northern Rivers.

Council’s resource recovery education officer Dominique Pomeroy said she hoped many Tweed households would sign up.

“Events like this provide a great opportunity for a clean out, help keep items out of landfill and encourage a circular economy – keeping things in use for longer,” Ms Pomeroy said.

“Second Hand Saturday is one way we are working with the community to reduce our impact on the environment. Between 2016 and 2019 the event saved approximately 2,301 wheelie bins worth of second-hand items from landfill.”

Second Hand Saturday coordinator Linda Tohver said after much uncertainty over the past couple of years, it was great to be back on board with this fantastic community event.

“We are so excited to open it up to both weekends giving more people the opportunity to get involved,” Ms Tohver said.

“Scheduled just one month before Christmas, it’s the perfect time to swap your pre-loved items for pre-Christmas cash and if you’re a shopper, seek out the ultimate, one-of-a-kind gift from the hundreds of sales that will be on offer across our region.”

Second Hand Saturday provides residents of the Tweed, Byron, Ballina, Kyogle, Lismore, Richmond Valley and Clarence Valley council areas the opportunity to be part of a positive movement that promotes re-use and repair over landfill.

“All you have to do is register your garage sale online at secondhandsaturday.com.au and we take care of your free online advertising and promotion,” Ms Toyler said.

All registered garage sale listings will appear on the Second Hand Saturday website and the free Second Hand Saturday app, which can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Residents can register their own home garage sale, or coordinate a joint garage sale in their street, with their local school, preschool, community organisation or church.

Registrations close on Friday 11 November. For more information, visit the Second Hand Saturday website at secondhandsaturday.com.au or follow the @mysecondhandsaturday Facebook page.

Residents across the Northern Rivers are gearing up for double the fun this Second Hand Saturday to be held on 19 and 26 November.

THE ANGELS ANNOUNCE 50 YEARS IN THE MAKING NATIONAL TOUR

TWO HOURS AND TWO SETS OF GREATEST HITS AND RARITIES DEBUTING THEIR BRAND NEW LINE-UP WITH NICK NORTON ON VOCALS AND GUITAR.

The Angels have announced a string of national tour dates kicking off in September in celebration of their five decades as one of Australia’s most revered rock bands.

The 50 Years In The Making tour will see the band traverse the country with dates scheduled across South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania with former drummer Nick Norton taking centre stage as their new front man replacing Dave Gleeson after his 12 years in the role.

Performing in The Angels, the band responsible for some of the most unforgettable songs in Australian music, takes a musician with remarkable talent and having been a member of the band since 2011, Norton is a familiar face to fans.  He will not only be fronting the band on vocals but will be playing alongside Rick and John Brewster on guitar and as ticket holders to the Brewster Brothers Electric shows from earlier this year can attest, he is more than ready to assume one of the greatest gigs in Australian rock.

As founding member John Brewster explains, “Nick is an incredible musician and a great singer and songwriter. He obviously knows the songs like the back of his hand and the fans already know and love him, so he’s the perfect fit. We can’t wait to hit the road.”

“The 50th anniversary is a very special time for The Angels,” John says. “And it means a lot that the fans already know Nick. Our relationship with the audience means everything to us and we’ll never take that for granted.”

Respected guitarist Rick Brewster adds, “The time we get to spend onstage makes everything else worthwhile,” Rick adds. “It’s always been about the songs and the power of the guitars.”

“We’ve already got a very busy six months ahead of us, which is brilliant for the new line-up” says Nick Norton.  “There’s such a heritage of great music there, classic songs, killer riffs. The legwork is already done, I just have to get up and sing them. Twelve years in the band behind the kit has provided the pedigree, not to mention learning at the school of Rock from the honourable Dave Gleeson. I look  forward to sweating it out at venues across the nation with the fans, heading into The Angels 50th year!”

With a set-list of catalogue classics that are ingrained in the hearts of every Australian rock fan, including Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again, Take A Long Line, No Secrets, Shadow Boxer, Marseilles, I Ain’t The One, Comin’ Down, Mr Damage, After The Rain, Night Attack, Dogs Are Talking and We Gotta Get Out Of This Place, it is no wonder that the famous American critic David Fricke called The Angels “a guaranteed great time anywhere”.

Replacing Nick on drums is John’s son Tom, meaning The Angels will now have two sets of Brewster Brothers – John and Rick on guitar, and Sam (who joined the band in 2013) on bass, and Tom on drums.

As Ian McFarlane, the author of The Encyclopedia of Australian Rock and Pop, noted: “The Angels helped re-define the Australian pub rock tradition.” And now John Brewster, Rick Brewster, Sam Brewster, Tom Brewster and Nick Norton are giving it another twist.

This is it, folks – an exciting new chapter in the storied career of The Angels.  Let the night roll on!

THE ANGELS ARE:

Tom Brewster (drums); John Brewster (guitar/vocals); Nick Norton (lead vocals/guitar); Rick Brewster (lead guitar); Sam Brewster (bass/vocals).

Spaghetti Circus brings joy to young and old!

Spaghetti Circus have been on a very special tour. As part of the company’s outreach program their Junior Performance Troupe performed in five pre-schools and four aged care facilities across the Byron Shire last week to foster connection and joy across generations.

Spaghetti Circus has been running the Intergenerational Tour since 2011 and are passionate about creating opportunities for young people to interact with all members of the community, regardless of age, ability, or economic means.

“Our Intergenerational Tour takes joy into our community and uses circus as a vehicle to help people reconnect. This is particularly special for many elderly in our community facing social isolation,” said Marisa Snow, Spaghetti Circus Development and Partnerships Manager.

The tour is funded through Byron Shire Council’s Community Initiatives Program aimed at addressing specific needs and building a sense of community.

“The aim of the Community Initiatives Program is to provide seed funding for projects run by not-for-profit community organisations and groups that will create positive social, cultural, and environmental outcomes.

“Spaghetti Circus was one of 11 projects chosen, as they represent the unique, creative and community spirit that characterises our shire,” Byron Shire Council Mayor, Michael Lyon, said.

The week-long tour featured Spaghetti’s ‘Super Mighty’ troupe of 8-11 year old performers. Toto, aged 8, from the troupe said “I really enjoyed going to the pre-schools and seeing how other kids learn to do circus balances.” Maeve, aged 11, said “I loved going to the old people’s homes and making them happy as they don’t get to go out much.”

Patricia Brown, a resident of Coolamon Villa, watched the troupe perform and said “they were all fantastic, better than anything I’ve ever seen. When they grow up they’ll be up there in the middle of everything, becoming whatever they might want to be.”

Spaghetti Circus proves once again the power of circus to bring joy and build connections across generations.
