Healthcare Helper Volunteers Sought For Byron Hospital
Community volunteers invited to bring comfort and companionship to local patients
Byron Central Hospital is calling on community-minded residents to become part of a new volunteer initiative designed to support patients and hospital staff through companionship and care.
The Healthcare Helper volunteer program, operated by the Northern NSW Local Health District, is set to begin at Byron Central Hospital and aims to strengthen patient wellbeing through emotional support and engagement.
The program recruits volunteers from the local community to work alongside hospital staff, helping provide comfort and companionship to patients and their families during hospital stays.
Byron Central Hospital Executive Officer and Director of Nursing Tracey Sheehan said the initiative had already delivered positive outcomes at other hospitals across the district and was expected to make a valuable contribution locally.
Ms Sheehan said volunteers played an important role in supporting both patients and nursing staff, adding that companionship could make a significant difference to the hospital experience.
The hospital is particularly seeking volunteers to serve as patient companions within the Inpatient Unit, where they will spend time with patients and assist with support and engagement activities.
Inpatient Unit Nurse Unit Manager Emily Duval said volunteers would provide invaluable assistance on the ward.
She said many patients could benefit greatly from social interaction, companionship and enrichment activities while receiving care.
The Healthcare Helper program already has around 150 volunteers supporting hospitals across Northern NSW, including facilities at Tweed Valley, Ballina, Lismore, Grafton, Maclean, Kyogle, Nimbin, Urbenville and Bonalbo.
Hospital representatives are encouraging people from all backgrounds and age groups to consider volunteering, with no prior experience required. All successful applicants undertake orientation and training to ensure they are prepared and supported in their roles.
The program offers locals an opportunity to give back to the community while helping improve the hospital experience for patients across the Byron region.
