Ballina Nine Hole Golfers Battle Rain And Deliver Brilliant Performances
Rain, raincoats and resilient golf highlight another memorable week on the Ballina fairways.
Rain, raincoats and resilient golf were the order of the week as the Ballina Nine Hole Group once again proved that a little wet weather is no obstacle to competitive spirit and great camaraderie on the course.
Tuesday 12th May began under gloomy skies, with showers greeting players on the opening tee. However, the determined field refused to let the conditions dampen the action. As the rain eased throughout the round, the scoring heated up and produced an exciting finish at the top of the leaderboard.
Susan Frazier rose to the challenge superbly, producing a composed and consistent round to finish with an impressive 18 points. Victory was only secured after a tense countback with Cathy Munro, who matched the winning score shot-for-shot in a terrific performance of her own. Helen Stevens was close behind with a strong 17 points to claim third place after another steady display.
The on-course contests added even more excitement to the day. Helen Stevens displayed precision under pressure to claim Nearest the Pin honours in Division 1, while Paula Bale secured Division 2 bragging rights with an excellent shot. The Longest Putt competition on the 18th green delivered a dramatic finish, with Susan Frazier capping off her successful day by sinking the winning putt.
Thursday 14th May brought another testing round as players battled constantly changing weather conditions, with raincoats going on and off throughout the morning. Slippery fairways and tricky greens created extra challenges, yet the Ballina ladies once again demonstrated remarkable determination and resilience.
Kate Williams delivered the standout performance of the day, handling the difficult conditions beautifully to post a winning 19 points. Jan Galletly fought hard to secure second place with 13 points, edging out Maria Donnelly on countback after both players finished level.
Nearest the Pin in Division 1 remained unclaimed after no player could find the ideal line, while Denise McInerney produced the shot of the day in Division 2 to secure the prize.
Despite persistent rain and unpredictable conditions across both competitions, the Ballina Nine Hole Group once again showcased the wonderful spirit, friendly rivalry and love of the game that continues to make weekly events such an enjoyable highlight for all involved.
