Short film festival celebrates makers around the world
“Exploring the Art of Making: Makers’ Film Festival Comes to Murwillumbah” Experience the essence of craftsmanship on the silver screen as the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre proudly presents the Makers’ Film Festival at the iconic Regent Cinema on Saturday, March 23.
Showcasing an array of international short films, this unique festival delves into the traditions, skills, and impacts of the art of ‘making.’ Featuring 17 captivating short films from locations spanning Mallorca to Morocco, Kazakhstan to Singapore, and beyond, this year’s program promises a mesmerizing journey through the world of craftsmanship.

Curated with care, the MFF23 program runs for 90 minutes, divided into two parts with a brief intermission. Each film, ranging from one to 10 minutes in duration, offers a glimpse into various craft disciplines, including furniture, textiles, ceramics, glass, jewelry, and more. From insightful interviews to captivating documentaries and enchanting stop-motion animations, the festival presents a rich tapestry of creativity and innovation.

Meredith Cusack, Curator of Public Programs at Tweed Regional Gallery, expressed her excitement about bringing the spotlight to local makers. “Our region is brimming with incredible artisans who can draw inspiration from this cinematic showcase,” she remarked. “The films highlight the unique mark of each maker, celebrating the intimate connection between creator and creation.”

Produced by Maker & Smith, the Makers’ Film Festival embarks on a tour across Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. With only one local screening in Murwillumbah, this event is not to be missed for enthusiasts of craftsmanship and cinematic storytelling alike.
