Northern Rivers Rail Trail set to be the region’s top visitor attraction

By Sarah Waters

More than 100,000 people have visited the Northern Rivers Rail Trail (NRRT) since it opened in March this year.

The 24km Tweed section, from Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek, is the first stage of the NRRT project, which will eventually connect Murwillumbah and Casino.

On average, the trail is attracting 12,734 people per month or 415 people daily.

The busiest day is Sunday (with weekends the busiest overall) and Monday and Tuesday the quieter of the week.

Most people are out on the trail between 9am – 11am.

The Rail Trail provides unique nature and outdoor recreation opportunities, especially as a free, safe and family-friendly experience

Mayor of Tweed Shire Chirs Cherry said the rail trail’s success could be attributed to the unique nature and outdoor recreation opportunities it provides, especially as a free, safe and family-friendly experience.

“The rail trail provides an opportunity to reconnect with nature, breathe in fresh air and soak in the breathtaking beauty of the Tweed’s landscapes and the charming village life at our seven rest stops,” Ms Cherry said.

“The popularity of this attraction reflects well for our destination as we showcase the strengths of nature and outdoor recreation that is accessible for all.”

The Tweed’s neighbouring councils – Byron Shire Council and Richmond Valley – are either considering or committed to connecting to the rail trail.

Ms Cherry said once the overall project is complete, it will enhance and connect communities, making the Northern Rivers Rail Trail a regional asset for locals and visitors.

“This landmark success further highlights the benefits of this project in terms of community wellbeing, tourism and the economy.

“We are really proud of what we have achieved so far with more rail trail activations on the way as we prepare for summer and peak periods,” she said.

The Richmond Valley section of the NRRT has made good progress and remains on schedule for a soft opening this December.

Byron Shire Council has resolved to move forward with planning and approvals for the rail trail expansion extending from Mullumbimby to Crabbes Creek, which will encompass the old Byron Bay station through Bangalow to Booyong.

Byron Shire Council is also exploring funding opportunities to revitalise the Byron Shire rail corridor.

THE ANGELS ANNOUNCE 50 YEARS IN THE MAKING NATIONAL TOUR

TWO HOURS AND TWO SETS OF GREATEST HITS AND RARITIES DEBUTING THEIR BRAND NEW LINE-UP WITH NICK NORTON ON VOCALS AND GUITAR.

The Angels have announced a string of national tour dates kicking off in September in celebration of their five decades as one of Australia’s most revered rock bands.

The 50 Years In The Making tour will see the band traverse the country with dates scheduled across South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania with former drummer Nick Norton taking centre stage as their new front man replacing Dave Gleeson after his 12 years in the role.

Performing in The Angels, the band responsible for some of the most unforgettable songs in Australian music, takes a musician with remarkable talent and having been a member of the band since 2011, Norton is a familiar face to fans.  He will not only be fronting the band on vocals but will be playing alongside Rick and John Brewster on guitar and as ticket holders to the Brewster Brothers Electric shows from earlier this year can attest, he is more than ready to assume one of the greatest gigs in Australian rock.

As founding member John Brewster explains, “Nick is an incredible musician and a great singer and songwriter. He obviously knows the songs like the back of his hand and the fans already know and love him, so he’s the perfect fit. We can’t wait to hit the road.”

“The 50th anniversary is a very special time for The Angels,” John says. “And it means a lot that the fans already know Nick. Our relationship with the audience means everything to us and we’ll never take that for granted.”

Respected guitarist Rick Brewster adds, “The time we get to spend onstage makes everything else worthwhile,” Rick adds. “It’s always been about the songs and the power of the guitars.”

“We’ve already got a very busy six months ahead of us, which is brilliant for the new line-up” says Nick Norton.  “There’s such a heritage of great music there, classic songs, killer riffs. The legwork is already done, I just have to get up and sing them. Twelve years in the band behind the kit has provided the pedigree, not to mention learning at the school of Rock from the honourable Dave Gleeson. I look  forward to sweating it out at venues across the nation with the fans, heading into The Angels 50th year!”

With a set-list of catalogue classics that are ingrained in the hearts of every Australian rock fan, including Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again, Take A Long Line, No Secrets, Shadow Boxer, Marseilles, I Ain’t The One, Comin’ Down, Mr Damage, After The Rain, Night Attack, Dogs Are Talking and We Gotta Get Out Of This Place, it is no wonder that the famous American critic David Fricke called The Angels “a guaranteed great time anywhere”.

Replacing Nick on drums is John’s son Tom, meaning The Angels will now have two sets of Brewster Brothers – John and Rick on guitar, and Sam (who joined the band in 2013) on bass, and Tom on drums.

As Ian McFarlane, the author of The Encyclopedia of Australian Rock and Pop, noted: “The Angels helped re-define the Australian pub rock tradition.” And now John Brewster, Rick Brewster, Sam Brewster, Tom Brewster and Nick Norton are giving it another twist.

This is it, folks – an exciting new chapter in the storied career of The Angels.  Let the night roll on!

THE ANGELS ARE:

Tom Brewster (drums); John Brewster (guitar/vocals); Nick Norton (lead vocals/guitar); Rick Brewster (lead guitar); Sam Brewster (bass/vocals).

NSW playing the starring role in Australian film and TV industry

NSW has recorded blockbuster results in the annual wrap of television and film production, accounting for more than half of the $2.3 billion spend across Australia.

Screen Australia’s 33rd annual Drama Report released today shows a content boom is underway and NSW is cashing in most, with production spend locally hitting more than $1.3 billion in 2022-2023 – a 20% increase in 12 months.

The state set a new record for the third year in a row, with spend on foreign features up 305% since 2021-2022 and foreign TV and Video On Demand spend up 25% and 77% respectively.

The state’s success in securing big-budget international productions The Fall Guy, Anyone But You and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, helped to drive foreign expenditure in the state to a record $822 million, more than half of the $1.22 billion national total of foreign production.

Post-production and visual effects continues to grow from strength to strength across the country, generating a total of $714 million in 2022-2023. NSW saw a 15% increase in post-production and visual effects in a single year, bringing a total of $356 million from domestic and international film and television post production into the state’s economy.

This result is 64% above the 5-year average. In 2022-2023, NSW accounted for 50% of Australian post, digital and visual effects spend, slightly above the 5-year average of 49%. Sydney-based, world-leading post-production and visual effects studios including Animal Logic and Fin Design contributing to major releases including The Magician’s Elephant and Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Upcoming releases Furiosa and The Shrinking of Treehorn are also the result of NSW’s leading post-production and visual effects talent from DNEG and Animal Logic.

Minister for the Arts John Graham said:

“NSW is the leading state for film and television production in Australia demonstrating remarkable growth and I welcome these results. Close to 50% of the industry is based here, with over 2300 screen production businesses employing over 15,000 people.

“There has been extraordinary growth on the post production and visual effects side of the industry. Our NSW talent is second to none in post production studios and visual effects suites. I’m pleased to see these often unsung heroes of our industry are getting the national and international recognition they deserve.

“The screen industry is vital for the state’s economy, creating jobs, driving growth and injecting much-needed dollars into our regional communities, it is also critical for our social wellbeing.

“Stories that inspire, entertain, and bring us together are important for the social fabric of our communities, and showcase our great state on a global stage.

“With the continued support of the NSW Government through Screen NSW, I look forward to seeing our local screen industry continue to boom and showing that we really are the place for every story.”

Head of Screen NSW Kyas Hepworth said:

“With a strong pipeline of local and international production and post-production, visual effects and animation, the content boom has continued throughout 2022-2023.

“Screen NSW continues to offer targeted programs that will help the NSW industry go from strength to strength. We’re here to help tell your stories and take our local content and unparalleled filming locations to a global audience, whether it’s on the big screen, or the one in your back pocket.”
