NSW Government Reaffirms Support for TAFE NSW in the Northern Rivers
The NSW Government has affirmed its commitment to TAFE NSW as the cornerstone of vocational education and training in the Northern Rivers region. Minister for Skills, TAFE, and Tertiary Education, Steve Whan, reiterated the government’s dedication to securing a resilient future for TAFE NSW in the area.
Minister Whan visited Lismore to witness firsthand the impact of the devastating floods of 2022 on the TAFE NSW campus. He expressed concern over the extensive damage caused by floodwaters to every building on the site, including the destruction of valuable equipment and resources essential for training programs.
Despite the challenges, Minister Whan commended the resilience and dedication of TAFE NSW employees, many of whom also experienced personal losses during the floods. Within just three weeks of the disaster, training services resumed utilising alternative facilities at locations like Casino, Wollongbar, Ballina, and Southern Cross University.
In response to the damage incurred, TAFE NSW has been actively exploring options to safeguard its assets against future harm while meeting the training needs of the local community. Minister Whan emphasised the importance of community involvement in this process to ensure that the solutions implemented align with the region’s requirements.
NSW Parliamentary Secretary for Disaster Recovery and Member for Lismore, Janelle Saffin, welcomed the government’s commitment to restoring TAFE NSW facilities in Lismore and throughout the region. She underscored the pivotal role of TAFE NSW Lismore in training professionals across various sectors, including nursing, arts, and hospitality.
Ms. Saffin emphasised the significance of having a robust public training provider like TAFE NSW, capable of delivering essential skills to support the region’s economic growth and community development.
The NSW Government’s reaffirmation of support for TAFE NSW in the Northern Rivers highlights its recognition of the institution’s vital role in empowering individuals and strengthening the local workforce.
