Peugeot 508 PHEV is the French company’s first electrified passenger car.

Originally offered as a four-door sedan or five-door station wagon, the Peugeot 508 has been on sale in Australia since July 2011. It fitted into the space between the smaller 407 and larger 607, effectively replacing both cars.

The second generation 508 was launched in 2019 but didn’t arrive here until August 2021 and featured Peugeot’s first-ever plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain.

While there is a large choice of engines and equipment levels available overseas for the 508, only three models are available here, all with the top-grade GT variant and with the choice of Fastback or Sportswagon bodies and 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engines.

The 508 GT PHEV only comes as a Fastback, the engine-only 508 GT is offered in both body styles.

STYLING

The relatively small chequered radiator grille has chrome edge trim with the iconic Peugeot Lion symbol in the centre and 508 lettering above it at the front of the bonnet. There are twin headlights on either side above long curved turn indicators. ‘GT’ badges on the C pillar complete the car’s ID.

The PHEV has the fuel filler on the right rear panel and the battery charge point on the left.

The rear is even more attractive, with triple tail and brake lights each containing three vertical bars that rolls across when activated.

INTERIOR

Although the latest 508 is lighter, lower and shorter than its predecessor it actually provides greater interior space. Not to the extent of similarly sized SUVs but enough for reasonable occupant comfort.

The 508 comes with the latest version of the Peugeot i-Cockpit which combines the small sport steering wheel with a large head-up instrument panel and central infotainment touch screen, blended together and ergonomically positioned.

The seats are quilted Nappa leather throughout with both front seats powered, heated and with a multi-point massage function.

Rear seat space is borderline with just enough legroom but restricted headroom for taller passengers.

Boot space in the GT and GT PHEV Fastback is 487 litres with all seatbacks in place, expanding to 1537 litres with them folded. The Sportwagon increases these capacities to 530 and 1780 litres respectively. Powered tailgate is standard.

POWERTRAINS
The 508 PHEV combines a 133 kW 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine with an 11.8 kWh Lithium-ion battery and 81 kW electric motor mounted on the front axle for a combined power output of 165 kW.

The two non-hybrid 508 models are powered by a high-output version of Peugeot’s 1.6-litre, turbo-petrol, four-cylinder engine developing 165 kilowatts of power and 300 Newton metres of torque.

All variants are mated to an all-new Aisin eight-speed automatic transmission.

SAFETY
Standard across the 508 range are six airbags; enhanced ABS brakes; dynamic stability control; camera and radar activated emergency braking; blind spot detection; adaptive cruise control with stop and go function; lane departure warning; lane keeping assistance with road edge detection; driver attention alert; automatic high beam; IsoFix child seat mounts in the outer rear seats; speed sign recognition and speed limit warning; forward collision warning; electronic anti-skid system; and 180-degree rear-view camera.

INFOTAINMENT

All variants come with a 10-inch high-definition touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster in front of the driver.

Embedded 3D satellite navigation is standard including voice recognition. There’s also smartphone mirroring for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, both wired as well as two USB sockets in the front centre console and two more in the rear console plus 12V sockets, including one in the boot.

Sound is through a FOCAL 10-speaker premium system with dedicated amplifier and subwoofer. DAB digital radio is available for those who live in a capital city.

DRIVING
Low-slung styling can make it a bit awkward for taller occupants but it’s a sporty-ish car so that’s to be expected. Once seated though the seats are comfortable and supportive

Although the small squared-top sports steering wheel isn’t to everyone’s taste we loved it not only for its feel but also because it provides an unobstructed view of the digital instrument panel.

One of our least-favourite features in most new releases is lane correction which automatically adjusts the vehicle’s steering, often quite vigorously, to keep it in the centre of the lane. While we normally turn the feature off before we start our test, we found the correction in the 508 quite subtle and were more than happy to let it do its job.

We love driving electric cars with their sharp, smooth and silent acceleration and the 508 PHEV provides plenty of that when it’s in EV mode.

Out on the open road the 508 is in its element with the ride and handling that has always made Peugeots so popular with keen drivers. The GT tag is used far too often in current cars and in most cases is meaningless. No so in the 508 GT because it is far closer to being a Grand Tourer capable of cruising long distances through interesting drive routes.

With our JetCharge Wallbox we were able to fully charge the small battery in the PHEV in just over three hours. Peugeot lists a battery-only range of 55 kilometres. The best we could manage, in fairly moderate driving conditions, was 40 km.

Like all the other plug-in hybrids on the market that offer pure EV driving, Peugeot lists a totally unrealistic fuel consumption figure of 1.8 litres per 100 kilometres. With the battery fully-charged we covered 100 km using 3.4 L/100km. Although that’s nearly double the listed figure it’s still very good. However, with the battery flat, and running in normal hybrid mode including battery regeneration, we averaged a less-impressive 6.4 L/100km.

SUMMING UP
If you’ve had enough of the functionality and sensibleness of your SUV and crave a bit of driving enjoyment then the Peugeot 508 could be just what you’re looking for.

It’s a superbly-crafted and stylish car that drew admiring looks wherever we went.

However, unless you can conveniently maintain a charge in the battery and limit the distances travelled, then we feel the extra $17,000 that you need to pay for the PHEV over the petrol-only equivalent GT just can’t be justified.

All Peugeot passenger vehicles come with a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty extended to eight years, but limited to 160,000 km, on the battery.

Stop Press: As of the 1st of July 2022, Peugeot increased the prices on its passenger vehicles by 6.0 percent. This equates to between $3591 and $4620 on the 508. We suggest you get in quick and do some serious haggling at your local dealership.

The legendary off-road specialists at Arctic Trucks have taken the new-generation Toyota LandCruiser Prado to the next level, equipping it with serious upgrades for extreme terrain.

The 2025 Toyota LandCruiser Prado has received its first major modification package courtesy of Arctic Trucks, the renowned custom engineering firm specialising in rugged, go-anywhere vehicles. Known for their expertise in creating ultra-capable off-road machines, Arctic Trucks has developed the AT37 package—a combination of performance enhancements and aggressive styling tweaks.

Built for the Toughest Terrain

Headquartered in the United Kingdom, Arctic Trucks has designed the AT37 with input from its UK and Iceland development centres, collaborating closely with Toyota South Africa. This comprehensive upgrade enhances both the Prado’s aesthetics and off-road prowess, pushing its already formidable capabilities even further.

The transformation starts with a reinforced frame and bodywork, engineered to withstand the most demanding conditions. A relocated rear axle extends the wheelbase for improved stability, while a widened track enhances handling on rough terrain.

To make the most of the increased dimensions, Arctic Trucks has integrated a bespoke suspension system. Developed in partnership with Dakar Rally specialists R53 Suspension, the setup includes two-way adjustable front coil-overs with extended travel, upgraded rear springs, and dampers—delivering an extra 40mm of lift for superior ground clearance.

Striking Looks, Serious Performance

The AT37 package doesn’t just enhance performance—it gives the Prado an unmistakable presence. The SUV rides on a set of satin black ‘Heritage’ 17 x 10-inch forged alloy wheels, wrapped in massive 37-inch BF Goodrich tyres. Depending on the market, buyers can opt for All-Terrain T/A K03 or Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 rubber for ultimate traction.

Arctic Trucks has carefully balanced these modifications with the Prado’s factory drivetrain, ensuring the SUV maintains a low centre of gravity while achieving superior ground clearance and articulation.

A Legacy of Extreme Capability

Arctic Trucks is no stranger to crafting high-performance Toyota off-roaders. The company gained global recognition in 2007 when it built the legendary Toyota HiLux for Top Gear’s Magnetic North Pole Expedition—a feat that cemented its reputation for extreme engineering

While pricing for the AT37 package remains unconfirmed, it has already launched in the UK and other global markets—though there are no plans for an Australian release. The 2025 LandCruiser Prado itself marks a major milestone, arriving as the first all-new model in 15 years, with a staggering 17,000 pre-orders in Australia ahead of its November 2024 delivery.

Toyota remains tight-lipped about the next-generation HiLux, but mounting evidence suggests the 2026 model will be a heavily updated version of the current ute rather than a ground-up redesign.

While speculation has swirled about an all-new HiLux, recent spy photos confirm what many suspected—Toyota is taking an evolutionary approach rather than a revolutionary one. Expect a refreshed front and rear design, possible interior tweaks, and carry-over underpinnings that maintain the ute’s proven off-road capability.

What Toyota Has (and Hasn’t) Said

Toyota’s reputation for secrecy means official details remain scarce. However, Toyota Australia’s sales and marketing boss, Sean Hanley, hinted that while the next-generation HiLux is on the way, it won’t stray from the formula that has made it a best-seller.

“I think the new HiLux will need to meet criteria of capability—particularly off-road—reliability, and affordability. And whatever we do with HiLux, that will be our first goal,” Hanley stated at a media event in early January.

When pressed on the timing of the new model, he added:

“I always laugh when journalists ask me, ‘When’s the new one coming?’ You know the day we launch a car, we start planning a new one.”

His remarks came just days before spy photos surfaced, showing what appears to be a facelifted version of today’s HiLux, rather than a completely new platform.

Why Toyota is Sticking to the Current Formula

By retaining its existing underpinnings, Toyota ensures the 2026 HiLux will deliver similar off-road performance to today’s model. A heavy facelift is also far more cost-effective than developing an all-new vehicle—keeping development costs down and potentially maintaining competitive pricing for buyers.

This strategy aligns with earlier reports from South America, which first suggested the 2026 HiLux would be an evolutionary upgrade rather than a ground-up overhaul. The move also reflects Toyota’s cautious, reliability-first approach—prioritising durability over rapid design changes.

What to Expect

While full details remain under wraps, the 2026 Toyota HiLux will likely feature:

  • Refreshed front and rear styling for a modernised look
  • Updated interior with potential tech enhancements
  • Carry-over chassis and powertrains, ensuring familiar off-road capability
  • Potential price stability, given the cost-effective update strategy

With HiLux facing growing competition from next-gen utes like the Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi Triton, Toyota is clearly playing the long game—betting on reliability, affordability, and incremental improvements to keep the HiLux at the top of the sales charts.

While it may not be the all-new model some had hoped for, the 2026 HiLux looks set to refine, rather than redefine, Toyota’s legendary workhorse.

Sony and Honda have revealed the near-production version of their first electric car under the joint-venture brand Afeela, showcasing a luxury sedan aimed at the premium market. The vehicle, unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, is set to debut in the US in mid-2026, with plans to expand to Japan later that year. Australian availability remains uncertain.

A Tech-Powered Luxury Sedan

The Afeela 1 sedan combines Honda’s car manufacturing expertise with Sony’s cutting-edge technology. Measuring 4915mm long, 1900mm wide, and 1461mm tall, it closely rivals the Tesla Model S in size and is larger than the Model 3.

Equipped with dual motors producing a combined 360kW, the car boasts 483km of estimated driving range from a 91kWh battery pack. Charging supports 150kW DC fast charging and 11kW AC, compatible with Tesla Superchargers in North America.

The Signature variant, priced at $US102,900 ($AU165,000), offers features like 21-inch alloy wheels, rear entertainment screens, a bespoke sound system, and an array of tech enhancements. An entry-level Origin model, launching in 2027, starts at $US89,900 ($AU141,000).

High-Tech Interior

Inside, dual screens span the dashboard for driving and entertainment, complemented by a voice assistant and graphics powered by Unreal Engine, widely used in video games. Infotainment includes apps like Spotify, TikTok, and Zoom, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility remain unconfirmed.

The interior prioritises sustainability, using recycled and plant-derived materials for 70% of surfaces. It offers conveniences like wireless charging, USB-C and HDMI ports, and household power outlets. A ‘media bar’ on the exterior shares information with other road users.

Performance and Safety

Powered by dual 180kW motors for all-wheel drive, the car features air suspension linked to a 3D Motion Management System, integrating motor, brake, and suspension controls for optimal comfort and handling.

Safety tech includes 800 TOPS of computing power managing 18 cameras, nine radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and lidar for adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assist.

Market Position and Competition

Priced higher than competitors like the Tesla Model S Plaid ($US94,990) and BMW i5 M60 ($US84,100), the Afeela 1 targets luxury buyers seeking advanced tech and premium design.

Pre-orders are now open for California residents, with deliveries expected to begin in mid-2026. While its pricing and market position place it among elite electric vehicles, the Afeela 1 showcases a blend of Japanese innovation and engineering, offering a glimpse into the future of high-tech mobility.
