Women Over 40 – The Cabaret Set to Make Northern Rivers Debut at Byron Theatre
A new musical comedy celebrating the humour, resilience and life experiences of women over 40 will make its Northern Rivers premiere this October, with Women Over 40 – The Cabaret set to take the stage at Byron Theatre for two performances.
Running on October 2 and 3, 2026, the production brings together an all-female cast in a lively blend of comedy, music and storytelling that explores the realities of middle age with honesty, warmth and plenty of laughter.
Written by award-winning New Zealand playwright Lindsey Brown and directed by Olga Tamara, the contemporary cabaret shines a spotlight on the everyday challenges, unexpected triumphs and shared experiences of women navigating life beyond 40.
Through a mix of comic monologues, original songs and candid reflections, the production celebrates friendship, resilience and the confidence that often comes with age. While tackling subjects familiar to many women, the show approaches them with humour and optimism, delivering an evening designed to entertain while encouraging audiences to laugh at life’s inevitable twists and turns.
The cast features experienced performers Cass Eager, Cathy Levins, Joy Miller, Olga Tamara and Emily Turner, with musical accompaniment by Anna Honeychurch.
Playwright Lindsey Brown said the production was both a celebration and a reminder of the strength that comes from lived experience.
She said the cabaret acknowledged the challenges many women face during middle age while highlighting the wisdom, friendships and resilience developed along the way.
Rather than dwelling on hardship, the production embraces humour and self-acceptance, encouraging audiences to find joy in the realities of everyday life.
Women Over 40 – The Cabaret will make its world premiere at Byron Theatre before embarking on a planned national tour in 2027.
Organisers say the production is aimed not only at women over 40 but also at anyone who appreciates clever comedy, engaging live music and heartfelt storytelling.
Early Bird tickets are available throughout July, with general ticket sales scheduled to begin in August.
The two-night season offers Northern Rivers audiences the first opportunity to experience the new Australian production ahead of its planned tour across the country next year.
