Warwick Livestock Markets Firm as Lamb Prices Surge
Numbers remained steady in the cattle section at the Warwick and District Livestock Markets for the week ending March 6, 2026, while sheep and lamb numbers eased slightly. Despite the reduced supply, strong buyer competition lifted prices significantly in the sheep and lamb categories.
Pork numbers remained low but prices firmed slightly, while the poultry section of the pig and calf sale was again fully booked with steady demand from buyers.
Cattle Market
A total of 1,887 head of cattle were yarded, averaging $1,572.55 per head, with prices generally firm to slightly easier in some categories.
Bulls averaged 394.4c/kg, topping at 440c/kg, returning $2,072.31 to $4,260.59. Cows averaged 351.9c/kg, reaching 402.3c/kg, and returned $1,868.98 to $3,340.00.
Feeder cattle continued to attract solid competition. Feeder steers averaged 439.3c/kg, topping at 534.2c/kg, while feeder heifers averaged 387.8c/kg, reaching 460.2c/kg.
Heifers averaged 398.5c/kg, topping at 430c/kg, while manufacturing steers averaged 432.2c/kg. Stags averaged 420.2c/kg, returning $1,701.81 to $2,016.96.
Steers averaged 427.5c/kg, topping at 474.2c/kg, returning $2,265.28 to $3,130.00.
Among younger cattle, vealer steers averaged 436.9c/kg, topping at 550.2c/kg, while vealer heifers averaged 377.9c/kg. Yearling steers averaged 452c/kg, reaching 500.2c/kg, while yearling heifers averaged 388.7c/kg, topping at 480.2c/kg.
Sheep and Lamb Market
Agents APL and McDougalls yarded 1,854 sheep and lambs from the New England, South West and Western Maranoa regions, traprock country and local districts. The yarding consisted of approximately 70 per cent lambs and 30 per cent mutton.
Prices improved strongly across most categories.
Lambs topped at $284, averaging $214.26, an increase of $34 per head. Hoggets topped at $230, averaging $182.41, while ram lambs topped at $213.
Ewes reached $240, averaging $165.87, while wethers topped at $220 and rams reached $162.
Overall, the sheep and lamb yarding averaged $195.83 per head, an increase of $31 per head week on week.
Notable Sales
Arolla Pastoral Company recorded the sale top of $284 for 61.8kg Australian White lambs sold to Thomas Foods. The same vendor also sold 85kg hoggets for $230.
Campbell Bros sold 52.8kg Dorper lambs for $267 and 47.6kg lambs for $242, while Ole & Dykes sold 51.4kg Dorper lambs for $280.
Other strong sales came from Strathane P/L, Cameron Butler, Pikedale Pastoral, Lever Management, the Rubie Family, Wooly Bees and Warren and Wendy Schelbach, with processors and restockers competing strongly.
Pigs and Poultry
Pig numbers remained limited, with boars selling to $200, sows $235 to $255, porkers to $170 and store pigs from $50 to $180.
The poultry section again attracted steady demand with roosters to $20, hens to $12, pullets to $25, drakes to $22.50, guinea fowl to $35, turkeys to $15, chicks to $35 and ducks to $20.
Overall, the Warwick markets delivered solid results across most livestock categories, with strong buyer demand pushing sheep and lamb prices higher despite reduced numbers.
