Second Hand Saturday .. coming to a garage near you!

By MARGARET DEKKER

It’s billed as the North Coast’s biggest day of concurrent garage sales, spanning seven Local Government Areas from Tweed to Clarence Valley.

And in 2022, Second Hand Saturday will be bigger and hopefully better than before, stretching across two weekends this year; either Saturday 19 November or Saturday 26 November (or both!)

The concept of ‘Second Hand Saturday’ is to list online the individual garage sale, either at home or a coordinated joint garage sale with neighbours or with a school, preschool, community organisation or Church – which are all held on the same date(s) across the Northern Rivers region.

The community is encouraged to get involved by either holding sale or by finding their local garage sales and shopping for second hand items.

Now in its 14th year, Linda Tohver, coordinator of Second Hand Saturday, said going on past years’ experience, there’s likely to be hundreds of garage sales to choose from across the north, all under a sustainability imperative.

“Whether you host a garage sale or buy second-hand items, taking part in Second Hand Saturday is an environmentally, socially and economically rewarding activity.  Your efforts will help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and promote reuse and repair. Since 2016, 2301 wheelie bins of pre-loved items have been saved from landfill through Second Hand Saturday.

“After so much uncertainty over the last couple of years, it’s great to be back on board with this fantastic community event and we are so excited to open it up to both weekends giving even more people the opportunity to get involved,” Linda Tohver, Second Hand Saturday coordinator said.

Hosted by all seven Northern Rivers Councils and North East Waste, Second Hand Saturday provides residents of the Tweed, Byron, Ballina, Kyogle, Lismore, Richmond Valley and Clarence Valley Council areas the opportunity to be part of a positive movement that promotes re-use and repair over landfill.

“All you have to do is register your garage sale online at www.secondhandsaturday.com.au or by calling your local council, and we take care of your free online advertising and promotion.”

All registered garage sale listings will appear on the Second Hand Saturday website and the free Second Hand Saturday App, which can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Free registrations close on Friday 11 November.

GARAGE SALE SECRETS

5 top tips from Second Hand Saturday on things shoppers want

  1. Kitchen items

People love buying kitchen items second hand. The beauty of selling vintage or retro items is that they’re back in style and highly sought after. That old dinner set or Tupperware sitting at the back of the cupboard might be just what someone is on the hunt for. Give your kitchen a spring clean and clear out the clutter.

  1. Furniture

Have you got an old lounge lying around or a spare bed that’s rarely used? Why not make some space and sell off those pieces of furniture that are no longer useful. People are always on the hunt for second hand furniture and it’s important not to overlook things that could be lovingly restored.

  1. Books, books, books!

Got a bookcase full of books that you’ll never read again? Have the kids moved out and left you with their old collection? Pass on the joy of reading by selling your pre-loved books. Whether it’s novels, children’s books, cook books or biographies, second hand shoppers love an unexpected find to take home and read. And don’t forget those piles of magazines too!

  1. Building and gardening supplies

Do you have old building and gardening supplies filling up the garage or yard? From tiles, to pavers, bricks and timber there are plenty of things that bargain hunters can put to good use. And what about shovels, gardening equipment or old pots? Just give them a hose off and they’ll be ready for the next green thumb to reuse. With the spring gardening season upon us, you could also sell some plants.

  1. Musical instruments

Musical instruments are made to be played, so if you’ve got an instrument that’s no longer being used why not pass it on to someone else. Whether it’s a piano, guitar, ukulele or old amplifier, musos are always on the lookout for a second hand find. And while you’re at it don’t miss the chance to sell your old CDs and records. Those old tunes never go out of style!
