Applications open for Australia Day community event funding

Get your application in before 5 pm on 29 September 2023 – Council is offering financial assistance to community organisations across the Tweed who plan to hold small community events three days either side of Australia Day 2024.

Council’s Manager of Corporate Governance Stephanie Papadopoulos said these small community events have a big impact.

“As the Australian Government has given local councils a range of dates on which they can choose to hold their ceremonies, Council is offering financial assistance for eligible Australia Day Events to be held on one of the 3 days either side of 26 January 2024,” Ms Papadopoulos said.

“Bringing people together is paramount to fostering a vibrant community where both the people and places of the Tweed can thrive.

“We look forward to seeing the events our community groups have planned for the public to enjoy.”

The amount of funding available is based on the expected audience size of the event.

The 3 categories of funding support on offer are:

  • Category 1: $300 for events up to 149 attendees
  • Category 2: $400 for events with 150-249 attendees
  • Category 3: $500 for events with more than 250 attendees.

Community organisations applying for the first time will be assigned to Category 1 grant funding.

Community organisations keen to host an Australia Day community event can apply for financial support from Council.

There are criteria for application, which include:

  • Any community organisation requesting financial assistance for an event must be Tweed-based and provide an outline of the event.
  • The organisation must be an incorporated body and hold public liability insurance.
  • Funds are not to be used for a social activity for members of the community organisation exclusively and no financial assistance will be given to privately-owned businesses or companies.
  • Successful applicants will be required to place event details on Council’s calendar of events – whatsontweed.com.au – to ensure the public has information of the event.

The successful applicant must also recognise Council’s support for the event on the day and in all promotional material. Eligible applications will be assessed by the Tweed Shire Australia Day Awards Selection Panel on Thursday 19 October 2023.

All relevant approvals will need to be applied for and must be in place if the event is to be held on Council-managed land such as a park or beach.

To apply, please complete the application form on Council’s Australia Day webpage and return your application to Council by 5 pm Friday 29 September.

The Circus is in town and it is action packed

By Samantha Elley

Put your expectations away and open your mind to the ‘edge of your seat’ experience you will be in for when you go to see The Circus in Coffs Harbour.

“We are a seventh generation circus family, originally from Germany,” said tour manager and matriarch, Marie Weber.

“We bring acts that have never been seen under the big top in Australia before.

“These include FMX (freestyle) riders, the splitting globe of death, comedians, aerialists and even a human cannonball.”

Patriarch, Harry Weber, has been involved in the circus touring life for the past 40 years and the family are excited to be in Australia.

“We have been touring in New Zealand, South Africa, Korea and other international areas,” said Marie.

That’s no mean feat with a family of eight children who have all grown up with the circus.

“We have performers from all walks of life,” said Marie.

“There are about 40 crew and performers, including those travelling with families.”

Marie said they are all like one big happy family, especially when they have been working so closely together for so long.

“Most of us have been working together for more than 10 years,” she said.

The Circus has just wound up six shows at Lismore Showgrounds and is now heading to Coffs Harbour where they have a giveaway on their Facebook page ‘Weber Bros Entertainment’ for two VIP packages and 10 double passes to their shows.

They will be performing their action packed shows at Coffs Harbour Showground between June 6th – 16th.

Book your tickets at 0452003300 or online at iticket.com.au for two hours of great family entertainment. Prices range from $35 – $85 for adults and $25-$70 for children.

NOTICE OF MEMBERS EXTRAORINDARY LAND DEALING MEETING

Horizon

There is a place between sea and sky – a sacred realm, where the sun rises and falls and the light is new.

From two of the world’s great First Nations comes a brand-new work: Horizon. Some call it a feeling, some call it the mother spirit. It’s the place where sea meets sky, the horizon we all look to, the compass that guides us home.

In Bangarra Dance Theatre’s first main stage cross-cultural collaboration, leading Māori choreographer Moss Te Ururangi Patterson joins beloved Bangarra alumna Deborah Brown. Together they guide the award-winning ensemble in stories that honour their mother countries and the spirit that calls them home.

Brown is a proud descendent of the Wakaid Clan and Meriam people in the Torres Strait, with heritage from far across the seas in Scotland. She carries strength and resilience from her ancestors. Patterson was born in Turangi near Lake Taupō, and describes the sense of home as something alive, that he carries like a beating heart.

To open the program, Saibailayg (Saibai Islander) Sani Townson expands his acclaimed work Kulka, debuted in Dance Clan in 2023, to make a thrilling opening piece paying homage to Sani’s grandfather and his Torres Strait heritage.

Come explore the cultural forces that bind us together, across oceans and eons. Experience the resilience of the First Peoples of the Oceania region, that extends across the continent now known as Australia, the Torres Strait Islands and Aotearoa, our southern neighbour.

Horizon is a double bill opening with Kulka by Bangarra alum Sani Townson, followed by the primary piece, The Light Inside, choreographed by Bangarra alum Deborah Brown and Māori choreographer and Arts Laureate Moss Te Ururangi Patterson.

EVENT DETAILS:

  • When – 8-17 of August
  • Where – QPAC
  • Price – from $59
