Go Behind the Scenes This Local Government Week
Tweed residents are invited to discover the people, places and essential services that keep the region running during a week of free behind-the-scenes tours and community events.
Tweed residents will have the opportunity to step behind the scenes of local government this week as Tweed Shire Council celebrates Local Government Week with a series of free tours, demonstrations and community activities.
Running from Monday 3 August to Sunday 9 August, the program offers a unique opportunity to explore some of Council’s key facilities, meet the staff who deliver essential services and gain a greater understanding of the work that takes place every day to support the community.
Mayor of Tweed Shire Chris Cherry said the annual event provides valuable insight into the many services Council delivers, much of which happens away from public view.
“Council delivers 53 services, but much of that work happens quietly behind the scenes,” Cr Cherry said.
“Local Government Week gives our community the chance to step inside, meet the people doing the work and discover what it takes to keep the Tweed running.”
The week will culminate with the Murwillumbah Depot Open Day on Saturday 8 August from 10 am to 12 noon, giving residents the opportunity to explore Council’s new flood-resilient depot.
Visitors will be able to tour the facility, inspect Council vehicles and specialised equipment, learn about the many services that operate from the site and discover how the depot supports everything from road and park maintenance to the production of street signs. Free coffee, sausages and plants will also be available while stocks last.
Cr Cherry said the recently completed depot represented an important investment in the Tweed’s future resilience.
“The recent opening of our new Murwillumbah Depot provides an excellent opportunity for us to finish the week by inviting residents to see this exciting new facility,” she said.
The new depot was built to better protect the vehicles, equipment and materials that keep the community running after previous facilities were located in flood-affected areas. The project strengthens the resilience of Council’s essential operations and helps safeguard the resources needed to respond to future emergencies and maintain everyday services.
Beyond the depot open day, Local Government Week includes a diverse range of educational and community events.
Residents can learn practical ways to reduce household energy bills and waste during a pop-up information session at Tweed City Shopping Centre on Wednesday 5 August.
Several guided infrastructure tours will also showcase Council’s water and wastewater operations, including visits to Clarrie Hall Dam on Sunday 9 August, the Tweed Laboratory Centre on Thursday 6 August, and the Murwillumbah Wastewater Treatment Plant on Friday 7 August.
History enthusiasts can enjoy a curator-led tour of the Ritual exhibition at the Tweed Regional Museum on Tuesday 4 August, while those planning ahead can attend the “Life ends, but paperwork continues” information session at Tweed Valley Cemetery on Thursday 6 August, offering practical guidance on end-of-life planning.
Nature lovers are also invited to a guided tour of a unique property at Kynnumboon on Friday 7 August, where participants will learn about habitat restoration projects and the ecology of flying foxes.
As several activities have limited places available, bookings are essential for some events and residents are encouraged to reserve their place early.
The full Local Government Week program, including booking details for all tours and activities, is available through Tweed Shire Council’s Local Government Week webpage.
