Steers lead strong NRLX prime cattle sale at Casino
The Northern Rivers Livestock Exchange (NRLX) recorded a solid prime cattle market on April 15, with 2,181 head yarded and strong competition for well-finished steers supporting overall returns across the sale.
Steers were the standout performers, averaging 365.2c/kg and topping at 472.2c/kg, returning up to $2,248.53 per head. Demand remained particularly firm from processors seeking quality slaughter-ready cattle as producers continue adjusting stocking levels ahead of winter conditions.
Cows made up the largest portion of the yarding, with 672 head presented. Prices averaged 283.3c/kg and peaked at 349.2c/kg, delivering returns to $2,490 per head. The cow market remained consistent, supported by steady processor demand across northern New South Wales.
Heifers also attracted solid interest, with 537 head yarded. They averaged 280.6c/kg and topped at 360.2c/kg, returning up to $1,830.03 per head.
Bullocks averaged 359c/kg, reaching a high of 406.2c/kg, while bulls averaged 314.4c/kg and topped at 350.2c/kg, returning as much as $3,244.33 per head.
Lighter cattle categories showed mixed results. Vealer steers averaged 237.5c/kg, topping 300c/kg, while vealer bulls averaged 288.6c/kg, peaking at 376.2c/kg.
Across the entire yarding, the market averaged 308.8c/kg, with cattle returning an average of $1,035.14 per head and total turnover exceeding $2.25 million.
Limited numbers of store cattle were also offered, with steers and heifers selling to $130 per head, cows and calves reaching $1,100, and a single bobby calf making $130.
Agents reported steady competition across most categories, with processor demand continuing to underpin confidence in the Northern Rivers cattle market as seasonal conditions begin to tighten across the region.
