Rous County Council Completes Rollout of Digital Smart Water Meters to Boost Regional Water Sustainability
By Jeff Gibbs
Rous County Council (Rous) is pleased to announce the successful completion of its $3.5 million initiative to install digital smart water meters across its customer base. This strategic upgrade, which enhances water sustainability and security, has been implemented across the Lismore, Ballina, Byron, and Richmond Valley local government areas (LGAs).
The rollout began in Ballina in February 2024, with the first smart meters installed as part of a phased approach that has now reached all 2,100 customers. The final connection was completed on Friday, 9 August 2024, marking the full implementation of the project.
Enhancing Water Management and Customer Experience
The new digital smart meters, coupled with the “My Rous” app, provide customers with real-time information on their water usage, including customisable updates and alerts for water consumption and potential leaks. This represents a significant shift from the previous method of quarterly manual meter readings, which offered limited insights into daily water use and delayed the detection of leaks.
Andrew Logan, Group Manager Planning and Delivery at Rous, emphasised the immediate benefits, stating, “The new digital smart meters are already proving their worth, with dozens of our customers becoming aware of water leaks on their property through the daily information provided by the smart meter. This has allowed our customers to save money by not paying for undetected leaks and reduce the amount of water lost through leaking pipes. In the months that the smart meters have been installed, we have seen hundreds of thousands of litres of potential lost water kept in our water storages for future use.”
The My Rous app, developed by GreenBe, empowers customers to monitor their water usage actively, identify unusual activity that may indicate leaks, and explore ways to reduce their consumption. This proactive approach not only conserves water but also helps customers avoid unexpected charges due to undetected leaks.
Strategic Benefits for the Region
Tina Le, Chief Commercial Officer of Nucleus3, highlighted the broader impact of the project, noting that the Rous region is ideally situated to benefit significantly from smart water metering. “We’ve installed over two thousand smart meters for Rous, and the savings are expected to be substantial. The ability to quickly identify leaks is a major advantage, conserving precious water and reducing both water bills and unexpected charges from larger leaks. Additionally, the My Rous water app will enable residents to better understand their water usage and enhance customer service by providing data to address issues.”
Phil Rudd, General Manager at Rous, added, “The data that the smart meters provide will allow enquiries from customers to be resolved quicker and enable Rous to undertake water balances across our network. With data from our digital bulk water meters, we can potentially identify leaks in our bulk water mains.”
A Sustainable Future
This rollout represents a significant step forward in ensuring the long-term sustainability and security of water resources across the Lismore, Ballina, Byron, and Richmond Valley LGAs. By embracing digital smart metering technology, Rous County Council is leading the way in water management, helping to secure water supplies for future generations while empowering customers to take an active role in their water consumption.
