Getting to the Heart of Palliative Care: National Campaign Challenges Misconceptions
National Palliative Care Week is underway, encouraging Australians to have important conversations about future care choices and challenge common misconceptions surrounding palliative care.
This year’s campaign theme, “Getting to the heart of it: Big Questions. Real Answers,” aims to encourage people to ask questions and talk openly about their wishes, values and support needs.
Palliative Care Australia Interim CEO Simon Waring said many Australians still incorrectly believe palliative care is only provided in the final stages of life.
Instead, palliative care can begin earlier and work alongside ongoing treatment, helping people with life-limiting illnesses live as comfortably and fully as possible. It also supports families, carers and loved ones.
More than 450 Australians die daily from life-limiting illnesses and could benefit from palliative care support, yet many continue missing out or receive care too late.
Across the country, health organisations and community groups are marking the week through events, forums and awareness activities while encouraging Australians to wear orange hearts and start meaningful conversations.
