NSW Unveils $290 Million TrainLink Coach Upgrade to Transform Regional Travel
Regional communities across New South Wales are set to benefit from the biggest investment in the NSW TrainLink coach network in more than a decade, with the Minns Labor Government announcing a $290 million upgrade that will deliver more services, modern coaches and improved comfort for hundreds of thousands of passengers each year.
The nine-year investment marks a significant expansion of regional public transport, increasing services, extending network coverage and introducing a new fleet of accessible coaches equipped with modern passenger amenities.
The upgraded network officially begins rolling out this week, with 14 coach operators now delivering 638 long-distance services each week across 49 routes. That represents an increase from the previous 592 weekly services operating across 45 routes, providing regional travellers with more options and greater connectivity.
The expanded network will add almost 200,000 kilometres of coach travel annually, taking the total NSW TrainLink coach network to more than 7.15 million kilometres each year. The services will connect more than 360 destinations across New South Wales as well as neighbouring Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory.
Transport Minister Jenny Aitchison said the investment represents a new chapter for regional public transport and reflects the Government’s commitment to improving essential services outside metropolitan areas.
She said the enhanced network would provide more services, greater travel choice and safer, more comfortable journeys for the more than 580,000 passenger trips made annually on the TrainLink coach network.
On an average day, almost 1,600 passenger journeys are made on NSW TrainLink coaches, with many people relying on the services to reach medical appointments, workplaces, schools and universities, while others use the network to visit family, access government services or connect with long-distance rail services.
The new fleet has been designed to significantly improve passenger comfort and accessibility.
Features include upgraded seating, wheelchair accessibility, improved air conditioning, onboard toilets, mobile phone charging points, Wi-Fi or mobile reception booster capability and automated external defibrillators, helping bring regional coach travel in line with modern transport expectations.
Passengers will also notice the coaches’ distinctive new sunset orange livery, creating a modern and consistent identity across the NSW regional coach fleet.
More than half of the state’s regional routes will begin operating with the new coaches immediately, while the remaining services will transition to the upgraded vehicles over the coming months.
The investment comes as demand for reliable regional transport continues to grow, particularly in communities where public transport options are limited and travel distances are significantly greater than those experienced in metropolitan areas.
The Government says the expansion is intended to improve accessibility, encourage greater public transport use and strengthen connections between regional towns and major centres, making travel easier for residents, tourists and long-distance passengers alike.
With new routes, expanded services and a modern fleet now being introduced across the state, the $290 million program represents one of the largest improvements to regional coach services in recent years and is expected to play an important role in supporting regional communities well into the future.
