Flood Recovery Sessions Aim To Get Homes Rebuilt
Northern Rivers Homeowners Offered Direct Construction Support
Flood-impacted homeowners across the Northern Rivers are being invited to attend a new series of information sessions aimed at helping recovery projects move from planning approvals into active construction.
The NSW Reconstruction Authority (RA) is launching targeted support sessions designed to connect residents with builders, councils and industry experts as part of ongoing flood recovery and resilience efforts. The initiative is focused on helping participants in the Resilient Homes Program progress modifications, home liftings and relocations more efficiently.
The face-to-face sessions bring together the Reconstruction Authority, local councils, contractors and specialist trades to provide practical guidance and direct assistance.
The program forms part of Australia’s largest climate adaptation initiative, with the jointly funded Commonwealth and NSW Government programs investing $880 million in the Northern Rivers and $40 million in the Central West to reduce future disaster risks.
Progress across the regions is already significant.
Nearly 1,000 buyback offers have been approved to help residents relocate from high-risk flood zones, while more than 1,500 home assessments have been completed. More than 420 grants have also been approved to support rebuilding, raising, retrofitting and relocating homes. Currently, 146 homeowners are scoping works and 66 projects have already been completed.
The upcoming sessions are designed to bridge the often difficult gap between planning approval and construction.
Homeowners attending the sessions will be able to meet Reconstruction Authority staff, explore retrofit materials and options, connect with builders and relocation specialists, receive planning advice from councils and attend presentations outlining the construction and relocation process.
Local tradespeople and contractors are also being encouraged to attend dedicated industry sessions to help meet increasing demand as projects begin moving into construction.
NSW Reconstruction Authority CEO Kate Fitzgerald said the focus had shifted to delivery.
“This next phase is about delivery. We are focused on supporting homeowners to move forward confidently, while ensuring the local construction industry is fully equipped and ready to build,” Ms Fitzgerald said.
Northern Rivers Adaptation Executive Director Kristie Clarke said the sessions were about removing obstacles.
“If you’re part of the program, this is your opportunity to progress your project with the right people in the room,” Ms Clarke said.
Northern Rivers homeowner sessions will be held at Lismore Workers Club on May 27, Broadwater Hall on June 30 and Murwillumbah Civic and Cultural Centre on July 22. Industry sessions are planned at Mullumbimby, Coraki, Condong and South Lismore through June and July.
Residents and industry participants can register online through the Resilient Homes Program events portal.
