Nimbin Urban Boil Water Alert Lifted After Treatment System Repair
Residents in Nimbin village can once again drink tap water, with the boil water alert officially lifted effective immediately.
Lismore City Council said the alert, which had been in place since Wednesday, 25 February, was introduced after problems were identified with the village water treatment system. The issue has now been rectified, and NSW Health has supported the decision to lift the alert.
While normal water use can resume in the village, residents are being advised to first flush any affected water from household pipes. Council recommends running water for two to three minutes before drinking, including from the tap located furthest from the water meter, which is often found at the back of the property.
The lifted alert applies only to customers within the Nimbin village urban water supply.
Council has stressed that customers connected to the Nimbin Rural water supply on the outskirts of the village remain under an ongoing boil water alert. This continued warning affects properties along Tuntable Falls Road, Kirkland Road, Gungas Road, Anderson Road, Basil Road, Evelyn Way and Weismantel Road.
Residents in those rural areas should continue boiling water before drinking, preparing food, washing uncooked food, making ice, cleaning teeth or giving water to pets until further notice.
The original alert was issued as a precautionary public health measure after the treatment system problem raised concerns about water quality. Following repairs and water quality testing, authorities have determined that the village supply is once again safe for normal consumption.
The update will come as welcome news for Nimbin village residents and businesses, who have had to boil drinking water for several weeks while the issue was addressed.
Council says it will continue to monitor the water supply and provide updates for customers who remain affected in the rural network.
