Woman raises almost $15k for school program
Jeanette Foy-Wilson aka Gladys has wrapped up her fundraiser to raise awareness around domestic violence and fund a school program to educate young children about DV – what it looks like, where to get help and promotes healthy relationships.
Gladys presented a cheque to Jade from Kyogle Family Support Services for almost $15k. This money was raised after her tour of the Northern Rivers on her mobility scooter with purple being the colour of domestic violence and butterflies as her totem, to represent the freedom people experience when they are no longer in an abusive relationship.
The tour was hugely supported by the Mantra Legends Hotel on the Gold Coast and local businesses. Platinum sponsors of the tour include Mountain Blue blueberries, MJ Smith, Mr Steve Sherman and the Commercial Hotel in Kyogle. Many local businesses opted in for sponsorships as well including the Kyogle Pharmacy, Steven McNamara, Janelle Saffin, Kevin Hogan, the Kyogle Newsagency, Dave’s Bakehouse, Bi-Rite Home Appliances, Amanda’s Hair and Beauty, the Saw Spot, the Adams family, Harley &Co, Happy House Cleaning, Oopsa Daisy, Realities End, the talented Jasmine Phillips and donors who wish to remain anonymous.
“It was the experience of a lifetime”, said Jeanette. “I got to meet a range of people – young, old, men, women, children, LGBTQI+, rich, poor – and I was humbled by the trust people showed me by sharing their stories. There really are no barriers to domestic violence and anyone can experience it. That was the whole point of the tour – to emphasise that there are no barriers to domestic violence. It can affect anyone at any time.”
It is a very personal issue for Jeanette, who really wanted to raise awareness that men also experience and live with DV but feel unable to express it because of cultural stereotyping.
A local Kyogle celebrity, Gladys wanted to do something for her last big outing. And she has. Not only raising almost $15k to fund the DV program, she has spread the word across the Northern Rivers about domestic violence.
“I had a wonderful support team – everyone pitched in where they could and we made it happen. I’m very pleased with the result and feel I’ve made a worthwhile contribution to the community I love dearly”, said Jeanette. “I’d like to thank Gazza Quinlan, Lisa Kliewer, and Sophia Presbury for accompanying me on the tour – it was heartbreaking listening to the many stories we were told which usually ended up with one or all of us in tears. It was hard going at times”.
“They always say if you want someone to do something for you, ask a busy person. Cr Danielle Mulholland had some great ideas and was a driving force behind the fundraiser. She doesn’t just talk the talk, she walks the walk and Simon walks right beside her.”
“As for Dave and Jo Sudiro, they own our beautiful bakery and are very community minded. I was concerned about my scooter making it around the Northern Rivers before crossing the Qld border. I was paying off a replacement scooter and Dave and Jo paid for the balance owing as a surprise for me. The first thing I knew about it was the delivery of my scooter saying that it had been paid for in full. This is the generous spirit of the community in which I live and love.”
Kyogle Family Support Services (KFSS) were presented with their cheque today (Wednesday, 25th January) by Gladys and the Patron of the Kyogle and District Domestic Violence Committee, Councillor Danielle Mulholland.
“We have been chasing this funding for almost a decade now, from Council, and state and federal governments but weren’t being successful. If you want something like this done, you do it yourself and I’m so proud to have been a part of Jeanette’s fundraising efforts – this money will be put to good use to “Stop it (DV) where it starts” by delivering this forward thinking program in schools”, Clr Mulholland said.
Jade from KFSS was overjoyed. “This money means we will be able to address domestic violence in an innovative, meaningful and pro-active way, which is to flag these behaviours with children. Sometimes what you see is what you do and this program will break that cycle”.
For communities recovering from a series of disastrous years, Kyogle and the villages have done themselves proud by contributing so much to the campaign, during a time when community resilience is low and people are struggling. “The level of support the tour received was extraordinary. I’m blown away by people’s generosity”, said Jeanette. “It gives me hope for the future”.
School aged children from Woodenbong and Bonalbo created butterflies for the VIP event which were used to decorate the Commercial Hotel’s bistro area and were commented on by many in attendance – to them, Jeanette says “thank you”.
