Jeep Recon: ‘Trail Rated’ Electric Off-Roader Confirmed for Australia

The all-electric Jeep Recon has landed in full reveal mode. It’s already been confirmed for the Australian market. While the details still await local specification and pricing, the vehicle signals a bold shift for the brand. It combines rugged off-road capability with a zero-emissions drivetrain.

Built for the Dirt

Jeep has built the Recon on its ‘STLA Large’ platform (shared with models like the Wagoneer S). It has been equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system as standard. Power figures are impressive: around 478 kW of output and 840 Nm of torque. It enables a 0-100 km/h sprint in approximately 3.7 seconds. The 100 kWh battery offers an estimated range of up to 450 km in some markets. While the exact Aussie figure is yet to be confirmed, it places the Recon into serious territory for a large EV off-roader.

Importantly, the Recon isn’t just about straight-line speed. It carries the ‘Trail Rated’ badge—a certification traditionally reserved for Jeep’s hardcore off-road machines like the Wrangler. That badge signifies the Recon meets criteria such as ground clearance, articulation, water fording and traction—all tailored to serious 4×4 adventures.

Off-Road Features Galore

Jeep has gone all-in on physical capability. The Recon features 33-inch off-road tyres, 239 mm of ground clearance, an approach angle of 34°, departure angle of 34.5° and a break-over angle of 23.5°. These are specs that rival current high-end off-roaders. There’s a locking rear differential, large high-strength half-shafts, and even a front-motor disconnect feature. This feature improves on-road efficiency when AWD isn’t needed.

For specially tough terrain, a “Rock” mode is available along with Selec-Speed control. These are for tricky downhill and uphill climbs. Modes for Sand and Snow round out the off-road toolkit. Super-cool details include fully removable doors, rear quarter glass and rear windshield—tools not required. Plus, a dual-pane sunroof or optional power top for open-air driving.

Interior & Technology Focus

Inside, Jeep has prioritised durable, functional finishes with a modern tech pivot. A 12.3-inch digital driver display pairs with a large 14.5-inch infotainment screen—the largest yet offered in a Jeep. Physical climate-control buttons are omitted, but real buttons remain for drive-mode switching and off-road functions. Under-seat speakers, recycled materials and synthetic surfaces feature across the cabin with clever storage built in. Rear-fold seats open up to 1,866 litres of space. An additional under-bonnet “frunk” offers ~85 litres for smaller items.

Australian Significance

Although Jeep Australia hasn’t yet revealed local pricing or timing, the local confirmation of the model’s intention to enter the market is a strong signal. The Recon would become the brand’s first truly rugged EV in Australia—stepping beyond the current Avenger EV (which is urban-focused) and slotting above the Wagoneer S in the line-up.

For Aussie buyers craving a zero-emissions vehicle that retains serious off-road DNA, the Recon offers something rare. It’s a large EV that refuses to compromise on terrain capability. With the country’s growing EV infrastructure, a model like this may well align. It meets the desires of four-wheel-drive enthusiasts who’ve so far been underserved.

Production and Launch Timing

Production of the Recon is set to commence at Jeep’s Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico early next year. The North American rollout comes first with broader global expansion—including Australia—following later in the year.

Jeep has said the Recon remains true to brand heritage while embracing electrification. “Electrification isn’t just compatible with off-road excellence; it can elevate it,” says CEO Bob Broderdorf.

Final Thoughts

The Jeep Recon brings a powerful combination: full-electric drivetrain, top-tier off-road hardware, and the potential to deliver true adventure in a zero-emissions format. For Australians who love to roam off the beaten track but also care about sustainability and modern technology, this model could be a significant game-changer. The wait for local pricing and timing continues—but the wait is becoming less abstract and more exciting.
