Hosting a children’s birthday party in Byron Shire just got easier—and greener. Byron Shire Council is now offering free loans of reusable party kits designed to make celebrations both affordable and environmentally friendly.
Each kit includes brightly coloured plates, cups, bowls and cutlery—everything needed for a fun and sustainable party. Local business Possumbilities has also joined the effort, supplying vibrant bunting crafted from repurposed, second-hand fabrics.
“These party kits look amazing, and I really hope that parents get behind this initiative as a way of reducing single-use waste,” said Byron Shire Mayor, Sarah Ndiaye. “It also makes so much sense to borrow a party kit rather than having to store partyware away for 12 months until the next birthday rolls around. These sets are beautiful, free to borrow and can be used over and over.”
Council’s Litter and Illegal Dumping Prevention Officer, Anika Brown, said the kits were developed to highlight how much waste can be generated from simple events like children’s parties. “We’re helping people understand where single-use waste is created—through disposable plates, cups, serviettes, plastic wrapping and decorations—and giving them an easy alternative,” she said.
Single-use items make up about 40% of all litter found in the environment, with balloons among the most harmful. They are a major threat to Australian seabirds and marine life. “We’re offering a practical solution that supports the Balloon-Free Byron Shire initiative by providing free reusable items and decorations,” Ms Brown added.
Residents can book the reusable party kits via the Byron Shire Council website. The project is a joint initiative between Byron Shire Council and North East Waste, promoting community-led waste reduction and environmental stewardship across the region.
