Chillingham Voices Brings Stage And Screen Favourites To Murwillumbah

A Sunday afternoon of much-loved songs, local voices and movie-inspired costumes.

From Broadway favourites to movie classics, Chillingham Voices brings the magic of stage and screen to Murwillumbah.

Songs that have travelled from the theatre to the cinema, and stayed with audiences long after the final curtain, will fill All Saints Anglican Church when Chillingham Voices Choir performs in Murwillumbah on Sunday, October 4.

The choir’s Songs From Stage and Screen concert begins at 2.30pm daylight saving time at the church on Byangum Road. Its program draws on familiar musicals and films, giving audiences a chance to revisit songs they know while hearing them performed by local voices.

Music from Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King will feature alongside other favourites. Lead conductor Barbara Crellin said the choir had chosen a broad program with something for everyone.

Among the planned highlights are Bring Him Home from Les Misérables, Think of Me from The Phantom of the Opera and Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King. The program will also include As Time Goes By, Karl Jenkins’s Adiemus, Dream a Little Dream of Me and My Funny Valentine.

Together, the selections move between the drama of musical theatre, the warmth of film songs and pieces with a more reflective mood. For those who know every word of a favourite show tune, the concert offers the pleasure of hearing it in a new setting. For others, it may be an introduction to music they have yet to discover.

The afternoon will feature performances by the choir’s Hot Chilli Chicks and Cool Chilli Dudes groups. The Dudes will present new arrangements by Mia Axford of Bedlam Boys and Orpheus, adding two more selections to the varied program.

Ms Crellin will share conducting duties with Barry Firth and Ben Axford. Mary Wiseman, Lynne Turpie, Ed Dryhurst and Mick Fairweather will accompany the performers.

There will be more than music to enjoy. Audience members are invited to dress as a character from a musical or movie, with prizes for the best costumes in two categories: Senior and Junior, for those under 15. It could be an opportunity to arrive as the Phantom, a character from The Lion King, or someone drawn from another favourite production.

Choir publicity officer Neville Jennings said proceeds from the concert would go to Wedgetail Retreat. Afternoon tea will be provided during the interval, giving the audience time to pause and enjoy the occasion before the music resumes.

The combination of well-loved songs, local performers and a chance to dress for the theme promises a lively Sunday afternoon. Whether drawn by a favourite musical, the choir’s performances or the cause the concert supports, audience members can expect a program that ranges across many styles and moods.

Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for concession holders. Children under 12 can attend free. Tickets will be sold at the venue from 1.30pm on concert day. Advance bookings can be made online at trybooking.com/DOMSV.
