Ballina Hosts State’s Regional Leaders as Key Infrastructure and Recovery Issues Take Centre Stage
Ballina has reinforced its growing reputation as a regional leader after welcoming mayors and senior local government representatives from across New South Wales for the latest Country Mayors Association of NSW (CMA) Regional Meeting.
Hosted by Ballina Shire Council, the gathering brought together regional decision-makers and senior State Government representatives to discuss some of the most pressing challenges facing country communities, including road funding, transport infrastructure, disaster recovery and long-term investment in regional Australia.
The high-profile meeting featured keynote addresses from NSW Minister for Roads and Regional Transport Jenny Aitchison, NSW Minister for Recovery Janelle Saffin, NSW Reconstruction Authority Chief Executive Officer Kate Fitzgerald, and NSW Shadow Minister for Regional NSW and Leader of the NSW Nationals Gurmesh Singh.
Discussions centred on strengthening regional infrastructure, improving transport networks, supporting communities recovering from natural disasters and ensuring country councils receive the investment needed to support future growth.
Ballina Shire Mayor Sharon Cadwallader said hosting the meeting was an important opportunity to bring regional voices directly to State leaders while highlighting the significant progress being made across the shire.
“It was a privilege to welcome delegates from across regional New South Wales to Ballina and facilitate important discussions on the issues affecting regional communities,” Cr Cadwallader said.
“Hosting the meeting also gave us the opportunity to showcase the significant investment taking place across our shire and the projects helping shape Ballina’s future.”
Major Projects on Display
As part of the program, delegates toured several of Ballina’s largest infrastructure projects and landmark destinations under the guidance of Ballina Shire Council General Manager Paul Hickey and Director of Civil Services Troy Anderson.
The tour included visits to:
- Ballina Bridges Duplication project
- Ballina Byron Gateway Airport
- Southern Cross Industrial Estate
- Upgraded Sharpes Beach carpark
- Pat Morton Lookout
- The Big Prawn
The tour provided delegates with firsthand insight into the investment transforming the region and supporting future economic growth, tourism and improved transport connectivity.
Disaster Preparedness Demonstrated
Emergency preparedness also formed an important part of the meeting, with Essential Energy showcasing its latest emergency response vehicle.
The specialised unit is equipped with Starlink satellite communications and advanced technology designed to maintain communications and assist frontline crews during major storms, floods, bushfires and extended power outages.
The demonstration highlighted the growing importance of resilient communications infrastructure as regional communities continue to face increasingly frequent natural disasters.
Business Events Deliver Economic Benefits
Ballina Shire Council’s Acting Coordinator Destination and Economy Lisa O’Meara said events such as the Country Mayors Association meeting provide immediate economic benefits while strengthening Ballina’s profile as a business events destination.
“Business events like this generate direct economic benefits for local accommodation providers, restaurants and tourism operators, while giving decision-makers the opportunity to experience Ballina and connect directly with our community,” Ms O’Meara said.
“When delegates experience Ballina first-hand, they leave with a greater appreciation of everything our region has to offer and are more likely to return as visitors with family, friends or colleagues.”
The meeting concluded with strong positive feedback from delegates, further enhancing Ballina’s reputation as a leading regional centre capable of hosting major conferences, government meetings and business events while showcasing the Northern Rivers to influential decision-makers from across New South Wales.
