New Community Service Centre Opens in Ballina to Support Vulnerable Families
Families and children across the Ballina region will have improved access to support services following the opening of a new Community Service Centre (CSC) designed to strengthen child protection and family support in the Northern Rivers.
The Minns NSW Government has invested nearly $3 million into the new facility, which brings together 20 staff from the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) in a modern, purpose-built environment aimed at improving outcomes for local families.
Located at 191–199 River Street in Ballina, the centre will serve as a permanent hub for child protection and family support services across the region. The facility includes 14 child protection caseworkers, along with additional staff working to assist families at risk and strengthen connections with local support services.
The new centre has been designed to provide a safe and welcoming environment for both staff and families seeking assistance. Facilities include contemporary workspaces, community meeting rooms and a dedicated family room that offers therapeutic spaces for children.
Importantly, the Ballina CSC will also provide operational support for the statewide Joint Child Protection Response Program, a specialised multi-agency initiative involving DCJ, NSW Police and NSW Health. The program responds to serious cases of criminal child abuse through coordinated investigations and support services.
Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Inclusion Kate Washington said the new facility ensures local families can access vital support services closer to home.
“This investment ensures local families in Ballina and surrounding communities receive the support they need, close to home,” Ms Washington said.
“The centre will provide a safe, modern and inviting environment where our caseworkers can support children and families when they need it most.”
Minister for the North Coast Janelle Saffin said the new facility reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening frontline services across regional communities.
“Our caseworkers carry out vital work, and this new space gives them the facilities they need to support local families with dignity, cultural understanding and care,” Ms Saffin said.
“It’s a proud day for Ballina and a major step forward for providing services in a way that is safe and respectful.”
The Ballina centre is the fourth Community Service Centre established for the region, following the rebuild and significant investment in three facilities in Lismore after the devastating 2022 Northern Rivers floods.
Secretary of the Department of Communities and Justice Michael Tidball said having strong community connections is critical when supporting vulnerable families.
“Connection to community is essential. This new centre gives families and staff a safe, inclusive and welcoming place to work together,” Mr Tidball said.
The new facility is expected to improve coordination between agencies and ensure families across the Northern Rivers can access help locally when they need it most.
