Implementation of a Youth Curfew in Alice Springs’ High-Risk Zone

In response to escalating concerns about public safety, the Northern Territory Government announced yesterday the commencement of an emergency Youth Curfew protocol targeting the Alice Springs precinct, now identified as a “High-Risk Area.”

Effective immediately, a curfew for individuals under 18 years of age will be enforced from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily, spanning the next two weeks.

This measure necessitates that youths present in the High-Risk Area during curfew hours must have a valid reason for their presence, such as employment obligations, participation in youth activities, or accompaniment by a guardian or responsible adult.

Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in legal consequences under the Youth Justice Act 2005, in addition to existing regulations under the Care and Protection of Children Act 2007.

To bolster this initiative, Police Auxiliary Liquor Inspectors will intensify their presence around Alice Springs’ bottle shops throughout the curfew period.

This action coincides with the recent apprehension of a key suspect involved in an incident at Todd Tavern on Tuesday, with a 17-year-old male now facing legal proceedings.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Martin Dole reported a successful first night of curfew enforcement, with no individuals apprehended for violating the curfew. However, addressing this issue requires a collective effort beyond law enforcement.

“We call upon the senior leadership of our community members to join forces with us in combating the wanton destruction plaguing Alice Springs.

“We urge all residents to familiarise themselves with the designated areas on the map and engage in conversations with youths to ensure adherence to the curfew.

“Your cooperation over the forthcoming 14 days is crucial and deeply appreciated. Together, we can safeguard our community and foster a safer environment.”
