MERCEDES-BENZ EQB FULL ELECTRIC

By EWAN KENNEDY

Good looking Mercedes-Benz EQB offers near silent running.

Mercedes-Benz continues the Australian rollout of its Mercedes-EQ family of fully electric vehicles by introducing the EQB, a compact SUV based on the B-Class, that can carry up to seven people. Or reconfigure the cabin to create more than 1600 litres of loading capacity.

The EQB has an electric drivetrain developed by Mercedes-EQ specifically for the Mercedes-EQ compact SUV range. The system’s operating temperature is optimised through cooling of the electric motors and the power electronics, as well as the high-voltage lithium-ion battery.

To reduce noise and vibration, which typically become more noticeable in the absence of the sound of a combustion engine, Mercedes-EQ engineers isolated the drive unit from the supporting frame.

The lithium-ion battery serves as the central energy storage unit for the electric drive system. Its high energy density provides a usable energy content of 66.5 kWh. Weighing just 469 kg, this unit is divided into several modules which are distributed beneath the vehicle floor to create a favourable centre of gravity.

Mercedes EQB have charging speeds with up to 11 kW of output via the AC (alternating current) charging system, or up to 100 kW using DC (direct current) charging.

Stowing all rear seats gives 1710 litres of storage space. With its flat floor and tall roofline, the EQB can accommodate bikes, surfboards, golf clubs and carts, and even largish furniture items.

With the second row in use which includes reclining seat backs, a handy 495 litres of cargo space is there. A three-way split-fold mechanism in the second row adds further options to configure the space available for passengers and cargo.

With the optional third row of seats fitted (EQB 250 only), the key storage measurements are 1620 litres (all rows stowed), 465 litres (second row in use) and 110 litres (all rows in use).

The new Mercedes-Benz EQB 250 variant, which is packaged as standard with five seats, while a third row that extends seating to seven can be selected as an option. Flexible and spacious, the EQB 250 is a smart choice for families keen to embrace the utility of being able to deploy two extra seats for occasional use.

Utilising a single e-motor driving power directly to the front wheels, the EQB 250 drivetrain generates 140 kW of power and a healthy 385 Nm of torque. The electric SUV is capable of achieving driving range of 371 km according to the WLTP test standard.

The Mercedes EQB 250’s cabin has spiral-look trim elements and houses a widescreen display, there are two 10.25-inch high-resolution screens.

The driver’s instrument panel can be customised with a number of pre-loaded themes, while the central screen acts as the portal to access the MBUX infotainment system, which includes audio, telephony and navigation controls as well as a number of vehicle settings.

The seats are finished in ARTICO upholstery with electrically adjustable and heated front seats, while the centre console includes a wireless charging mat for supported smart devices. Dual-zone climate control, DAB+ digital radio, Apple and Android smartphone integration, an advanced sound system and ambient lighting with a choice of 64 colours are all standard inclusions.

The Driver Assistance Package has active safety and convenience systems led by DISTRONIC active cruise control with Active Speed Limit Assist, plus Active Steering Assist, Active Brake Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist, as well route-based speed adaptation.

The standard Parking Package includes the PARKTRONIC parking assistant and a 360-degree camera, and the KEYLESS-GO Comfort Package includes an electrically operable tailgate including hands-free access.

Mercedes EQB 250 has acoustic ambient protection, which mitigates the risk posed to pedestrians and cyclists by the vehicle’s silent drivetrain by sounding an audible warning at speeds below 20 km/h, plus a reversing tone.

It has adjustable damping suspension with multi-link rear suspension to optimise ride comfort, LED high-performance headlights with Adaptive High beam Assist and featuring EQ-specific blue elements, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, and the Progressive Exterior package featuring distinctive chrome and aluminium trims.

An LED luminescent light band across the front of the bonnet is another EQ-specific design feature. It rides on 19-inch AMG 5-twin-spoke light alloy wheels.

Both models in the EQB range incorporate a Type 2 CCS charging socket capable of accepting up to 11 kW (AC) and 100 kW (DC), while charging cables for use with Australian domestic sockets and public charging stations are also supplied with either vehicle.

The EQB 350 4MATIC creates a sportier driving experience. Dual e-motors, one mounted on each axle, enable power to be sent variably where it’s most needed, and with a low centre of gravity thanks to the flat, wide battery pack optimally distributed beneath the floor, the EQB 350 achieves a stable yet highly agile driving experience.

A combined output from the two motors of 215 kW and 520 Nm, the latter fully available from any speed or even from a standstill, endows the SUV with impressive acceleration ( zero to 100 km/h in as little as 6.2 seconds) and sports car-like responsiveness.

Driving range is 360 kilometres according to the WLTP standard.

Available only in the five-seat configuration, the EQB 350 adds additional interior features to show its sporty nature. This includes sports seats with adjustable head restraints and DINAMICA microfibre inserts with red double top-stitching , a multi-function sports steering wheel in Nappa leather with a flattened bottom section, backlit spiral-look trim elements, AMG floor mats and illuminated door sills.

Exterior features include an electrically controlled panoramic glass sunroof, AMG-specific body styling including extra chrome trim pieces, a diffuser look for the rear apron, and 20-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels.

The Mercedes-Benz EQB 250 is priced at $87,800 in standard five-seat configuration, with a third row of seats adding $2900.

The EQB 350 4MATIC is priced at $106,700. Both models are on sale now.

EDITION 1 PACKAGE

For a limited time, EQB buyers can purchase the Edition 1 package, which creates a highly distinctive and even more stylish exterior appearance including AMG-inspired body elements, and also adds EQ-specific interior elements such as backlit trim and blue top-stitching on the seats and doors.

Until stock is exhausted the Edition 1 package will add $9100 for the EQB 250 model, and $3900 for the EQB 350 4MATIC.

Important note to editors – The price detailed in this document includes GST and any LCT applicable to the base / standard specification model but EXCLUDES ALL ON ROAD COSTS such as, for example, registration fees, stamp duty, CTP and the like.

Toyota Prado 250 Series Gets Arctic Trucks’ Extreme Off-Road Makeover

By Jeff Gibbs

The legendary off-road specialists at Arctic Trucks have taken the new-generation Toyota LandCruiser Prado to the next level, equipping it with serious upgrades for extreme terrain.

The 2025 Toyota LandCruiser Prado has received its first major modification package courtesy of Arctic Trucks, the renowned custom engineering firm specialising in rugged, go-anywhere vehicles. Known for their expertise in creating ultra-capable off-road machines, Arctic Trucks has developed the AT37 package—a combination of performance enhancements and aggressive styling tweaks.

Built for the Toughest Terrain

Headquartered in the United Kingdom, Arctic Trucks has designed the AT37 with input from its UK and Iceland development centres, collaborating closely with Toyota South Africa. This comprehensive upgrade enhances both the Prado’s aesthetics and off-road prowess, pushing its already formidable capabilities even further.

The transformation starts with a reinforced frame and bodywork, engineered to withstand the most demanding conditions. A relocated rear axle extends the wheelbase for improved stability, while a widened track enhances handling on rough terrain.

To make the most of the increased dimensions, Arctic Trucks has integrated a bespoke suspension system. Developed in partnership with Dakar Rally specialists R53 Suspension, the setup includes two-way adjustable front coil-overs with extended travel, upgraded rear springs, and dampers—delivering an extra 40mm of lift for superior ground clearance.

Striking Looks, Serious Performance

The AT37 package doesn’t just enhance performance—it gives the Prado an unmistakable presence. The SUV rides on a set of satin black ‘Heritage’ 17 x 10-inch forged alloy wheels, wrapped in massive 37-inch BF Goodrich tyres. Depending on the market, buyers can opt for All-Terrain T/A K03 or Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 rubber for ultimate traction.

Arctic Trucks has carefully balanced these modifications with the Prado’s factory drivetrain, ensuring the SUV maintains a low centre of gravity while achieving superior ground clearance and articulation.

A Legacy of Extreme Capability

Arctic Trucks is no stranger to crafting high-performance Toyota off-roaders. The company gained global recognition in 2007 when it built the legendary Toyota HiLux for Top Gear’s Magnetic North Pole Expedition—a feat that cemented its reputation for extreme engineering

While pricing for the AT37 package remains unconfirmed, it has already launched in the UK and other global markets—though there are no plans for an Australian release. The 2025 LandCruiser Prado itself marks a major milestone, arriving as the first all-new model in 15 years, with a staggering 17,000 pre-orders in Australia ahead of its November 2024 delivery.

With its extreme off-road upgrades, rugged new stance, and battle-tested components, the Arctic Trucks AT37 package transforms the Prado into a serious contender for the most challenging landscapes on the planet.

2026 Toyota HiLux: The ‘New’ Model That’s Not Quite All-New

2026 Toyota HiLux: The ‘New’ Model That’s Not Quite All-New

By Jeff Gibbs

Toyota remains tight-lipped about the next-generation HiLux, but mounting evidence suggests the 2026 model will be a heavily updated version of the current ute rather than a ground-up redesign.

While speculation has swirled about an all-new HiLux, recent spy photos confirm what many suspected—Toyota is taking an evolutionary approach rather than a revolutionary one. Expect a refreshed front and rear design, possible interior tweaks, and carry-over underpinnings that maintain the ute’s proven off-road capability.

What Toyota Has (and Hasn’t) Said

Toyota’s reputation for secrecy means official details remain scarce. However, Toyota Australia’s sales and marketing boss, Sean Hanley, hinted that while the next-generation HiLux is on the way, it won’t stray from the formula that has made it a best-seller.

“I think the new HiLux will need to meet criteria of capability—particularly off-road—reliability, and affordability. And whatever we do with HiLux, that will be our first goal,” Hanley stated at a media event in early January.

When pressed on the timing of the new model, he added:

“I always laugh when journalists ask me, ‘When’s the new one coming?’ You know the day we launch a car, we start planning a new one.”

His remarks came just days before spy photos surfaced, showing what appears to be a facelifted version of today’s HiLux, rather than a completely new platform.

Why Toyota is Sticking to the Current Formula

By retaining its existing underpinnings, Toyota ensures the 2026 HiLux will deliver similar off-road performance to today’s model. A heavy facelift is also far more cost-effective than developing an all-new vehicle—keeping development costs down and potentially maintaining competitive pricing for buyers.

This strategy aligns with earlier reports from South America, which first suggested the 2026 HiLux would be an evolutionary upgrade rather than a ground-up overhaul. The move also reflects Toyota’s cautious, reliability-first approach—prioritising durability over rapid design changes.

What to Expect

While full details remain under wraps, the 2026 Toyota HiLux will likely feature:

  • Refreshed front and rear styling for a modernised look
  • Updated interior with potential tech enhancements
  • Carry-over chassis and powertrains, ensuring familiar off-road capability
  • Potential price stability, given the cost-effective update strategy

With HiLux facing growing competition from next-gen utes like the Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi Triton, Toyota is clearly playing the long game—betting on reliability, affordability, and incremental improvements to keep the HiLux at the top of the sales charts.

While it may not be the all-new model some had hoped for, the 2026 HiLux looks set to refine, rather than redefine, Toyota’s legendary workhorse.

High-Tech Interior

Inside, dual screens span the dashboard for driving and entertainment, complemented by a voice assistant and graphics powered by Unreal Engine, widely used in video games. Infotainment includes apps like Spotify, TikTok, and Zoom, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility remain unconfirmed.

The interior prioritises sustainability, using recycled and plant-derived materials for 70% of surfaces. It offers conveniences like wireless charging, USB-C and HDMI ports, and household power outlets. A ‘media bar’ on the exterior shares information with other road users.

Performance and Safety

Powered by dual 180kW motors for all-wheel drive, the car features air suspension linked to a 3D Motion Management System, integrating motor, brake, and suspension controls for optimal comfort and handling.

Safety tech includes 800 TOPS of computing power managing 18 cameras, nine radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and lidar for adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assist.

Market Position and Competition

Priced higher than competitors like the Tesla Model S Plaid ($US94,990) and BMW i5 M60 ($US84,100), the Afeela 1 targets luxury buyers seeking advanced tech and premium design.

Pre-orders are now open for California residents, with deliveries expected to begin in mid-2026. While its pricing and market position place it among elite electric vehicles, the Afeela 1 showcases a blend of Japanese innovation and engineering, offering a glimpse into the future of high-tech mobility.

KGM SsangYong Electric Ute and 2025 Actyon SUV Confirmed for Australia

By Jeff Gibbs

South Korea’s KGM SsangYong is set to make waves in Australia with the anticipated launch of its first electric ‘lifestyle’ ute, likely to debut after the UK release in 2025. This innovative ute, based on the Torres EVX SUV, is expected to offer a practical, urban-friendly alternative to traditional ladder-frame utes like the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux.

KGM SsangYong Electric Ute Highlights

  • Inspired by the O100 Concept: Unveiled in April 2023, the electric dual-cab ute could be named Torres EVT, as suggested by badging on the concept model.
  • Urban-Focused Design: The ute will cater to drivers seeking a versatile, medium-sized vehicle ideal for city use.
  • All-Electric Platform: Unlike the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz, the Torres EVT will be electric-only, leveraging the Torres EVX SUV’s architecture.
  • BYD-Sourced Battery: Equipped with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, the ute promises a 462km driving range (WLTP).
  • Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) Capability: Owners can power tools or appliances directly from the vehicle, adding practicality for work or leisure.

Torres EVX SUV: On Track for 2025

The Torres EVX SUV, upon which the ute is based, will launch in Australia in the first half of 2025. Featuring:

  • A 73.4kWh battery with a front-mounted 152kW/339Nm motor
  • A focus on efficiency and versatility for mid-size SUV buyers
  • Potential dual-motor all-wheel-drive configurations under consideration
2025 Actyon SUV

2025 Actyon SUV

2025 Actyon SUV: A Familiar Name Returns

KGM SsangYong is also reviving the Actyon nameplate, with the new coupe-styled SUV slated for Australian showrooms in early 2025. Highlights include:

  • 1.5-litre turbocharged engine (120kW/280Nm) paired with a six-speed automatic
  • Front- or all-wheel drive options
  • A sleek, modern design derived from the petrol-powered Torres

Market Context

While the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz remain unavailable in Australia due to left-hand-drive production, the Torres EVT and EVX could fill the void in the growing ‘lifestyle ute’ segment. This niche caters to drivers prioritizing urban utility over heavy-duty off-road capabilities, a trend reflected in the popularity of mid-size SUVs in Australia, which represent nearly 25% of the total market.

The Future of KGM SsangYong in Australia

Rebranded as KGM SsangYong in Australia in October 2024, the company continues to leverage the legacy of the SsangYong name while introducing innovative models. While other markets have phased out the SsangYong branding, it remains in Australia to maintain brand recognition.

With a combination of cutting-edge electric vehicles like the Torres EVT and familiar nameplates like the Actyon, KGM SsangYong is poised to strengthen its foothold in the Australian market, appealing to both tech-savvy and traditional buyers alike.

2025 Peugeot 408 Australian Test Drive Review

By Jeff Gibbs

The 2025 Peugeot 408 brings a fresh take to the Australian crossover market, blending the aesthetics of a coupe-SUV with the practicality of a traditional SUV. As a stylish and premium offering, the 408 stands out with its distinctive design, innovative tech, and European flair. Its focus on delivering a dynamic driving experience and excellent efficiency caters to Australian buyers who appreciate sophistication with practicality.

Exterior Design

The 2025 Peugeot 408 is a head-turner with its unique blend of coupe and SUV styling:

  • Striking Front Fascia: Peugeot’s signature frameless grille, sleek LED headlights, and claw-shaped daytime running lights give the 408 a bold and aggressive look.
  • Coupe-SUV Silhouette: The sloping roofline and sharp lines exude athleticism without compromising rear headroom or practicality.
  • Rear Styling: Eye-catching LED taillights with Peugeot’s claw motif and a sporty rear bumper enhance the car’s appeal.
  • Wheel Options: Available 19- and 20-inch alloy wheels complete the sophisticated look.

The 408’s design is particularly well-suited for urban settings and stylish enough for Australia’s coastal and rural regions.

Interior Design and Comfort

Stepping inside the Peugeot 408, the cabin delivers a blend of premium materials and forward-thinking design:

  • i-Cockpit Layout: The signature compact steering wheel and elevated 3D digital instrument cluster provide a futuristic and ergonomic driving experience.
  • Premium Materials: High-quality finishes, soft-touch surfaces, and leather upholstery in higher trims create a luxurious environment.
  • Spacious Cabin: Despite its coupe-like shape, rear passengers enjoy ample headroom and legroom, thanks to clever packaging.
  • Cargo Space: The boot offers 536 litres of space, expandable to over 1,600 litres with the rear seats folded, making it practical for Australian road trips.

Technology

Peugeot equips the 408 with advanced tech to enhance comfort, connectivity, and safety:

  • Infotainment System: A 10-inch central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (wireless) is standard. The user interface is responsive and easy to navigate.
  • Customisable Controls: The touchscreen integrates customisable “i-Toggles,” providing shortcuts for frequently used functions.
  • Sound System: A premium Focal sound system is available on higher trims for an immersive audio experience.
  • Ambient Lighting: Multi-colour LED ambient lighting enhances the cabin’s premium feel.
  • Driver Assistance: Advanced systems like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and semi-autonomous driving features are included.

Performance

Australian drivers will appreciate the 408’s balance of comfort and dynamism:

  • New Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid system has been replaced by a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol three-cylinder engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. While the combined output drops from 165kW/360Nm to 100kW/230Nm, the mild-hybrid system provides 15.6kW/51Nm of assistance and can operate on electric power alone, unlike most mild hybrids.
  • Efficiency and Emissions: Peugeot claims fuel consumption of 4.7L/100km and CO2 emissions of 107g/km, enhancing efficiency.
  • Transmission Update: The eight-speed automatic has been swapped for a six-speed dual-clutch automatic for smoother operation.
  • Fuel Economy: Expect fuel consumption figures of around 6.5 L/100 km for petrol models and 2.0 L/100 km for the PHEV when used efficiently.
  • Ride and Handling: Peugeot’s suspension setup ensures a plush ride, while its lightweight steering and compact wheel make navigating city streets effortless. On highways, the 408 feels composed and planted.

Australian-Specific Performance

The 408 performs admirably on Australia’s diverse roads:

  • Urban Roads: The small steering wheel and tight turning radius make it easy to manoeuvre in crowded cityscapes.
  • Highway Driving: Excellent insulation and supportive seats ensure comfort on long drives.
  • Rural and Coastal Roads: The suspension absorbs bumps well, though the coupe-like stance means it’s not designed for serious off-roading.

Safety

Peugeot prioritises safety in the 408, meeting ANCAP’s five-star rating criteria:

  • Standard Features:
    • Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
    • Blind-Spot Monitoring
    • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
    • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Advanced Features:
    • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go
    • Lane Positioning Assist
    • 360-Degree Camera
  • Night Vision: Available on top trims, this system uses infrared sensors to detect pedestrians and animals in low-visibility conditions—a rare feature in its class.

Driving Experience

The 2025 Peugeot 408 shines as a daily driver and a long-distance cruiser:

  • Quiet Cabin: Enhanced insulation keeps road noise at bay, creating a serene atmosphere.
  • Sporty Edge: The compact steering wheel and precise handling make it more engaging than many competitors.
  • Efficiency: Hybrid models stand out for their low running costs and electric-only range, perfect for reducing fuel bills.

Pricing and Trims in Australia

The Peugeot 408 is available in several trims to cater to different needs and budgets:

  • Allure: Starting at around $50,000 AUD, this trim offers essential features like the i-Cockpit, wireless phone connectivity, and advanced safety.
  • GT: Priced at approximately $60,000 AUD, the GT adds premium finishes, larger wheels, and additional tech features.
  • PHEV: The plug-in hybrid variant starts at $65,000 AUD, combining eco-friendly performance with high-end amenities.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Distinctive, stylish design that stands out in the crossover segment.
  • Premium interior with innovative technology.
  • Efficient hybrid option with a good electric-only range.
  • Comfortable ride and engaging handling.
  • Ample cargo space despite the coupe-like roofline.

Cons:

  • Limited off-road capability compared to traditional SUVs.
  • Higher price tag may deter budget-conscious buyers.
  • Touchscreen-reliant controls may not suit all preferences.

Conclusion

The 2025 Peugeot 408 offers Australian drivers a unique blend of style, comfort, and efficiency. Its coupe-inspired design and luxurious interior cater to those seeking sophistication, while its dynamic handling and hybrid options make it practical for everyday use. While it may not suit hardcore off-roaders, the 408 is an excellent choice for urban professionals, small families, and anyone looking for a premium European crossover with a touch of flair.
