Richmond Electorate Community Assembly Showcases Collaborative Democracy in Murwillumbah

Deliberative Democracy Murwillumbah
On 16 April, more than 60 residents and three federal candidates gathered at the Murwillumbah Community Centre for the Candidates Meet the Community deliberative democracy forum—the only public candidate event in the Tweed Shire ahead of the 2025 Federal Election.
Rather than campaign speeches, the format encouraged listening and respectful discussion, with candidates working directly with community members on shared goals. Three candidates—Mandy Nolan (Greens), James McKenzie (Independent), and Phillip Peterkin (Trumpet of Patriots)—participated in the assembly, co-facilitated by Chels Hood Withey and Tim Hollo of the Green Institute.
Participants, representing a wide cross-section of the community, developed a set of people-first policy proposals, including:
- Fair taxation targeting fossil fuel giants and billionaires
- Truth-telling and treaty with First Nations people
- Local housing audits and investment in public housing
- Urgent climate action via renewable energy transitions
- Environmental safeguards like ending native forest logging
- Improved and accessible public transport infrastructure
Bundjalung Elder Aunty Deidrie Currie opened the forum, commending the consensus-based process as traditional and effective.
Despite invitations, most major party candidates, including Justine Elliot (Labor) and Kimberly Hone (Nationals), did not attend. Organisers say their absence underscores the importance of creating space for inclusive, community-led discussion.
Residents say the event was a powerful example of democracy in action, and organisers are now encouraging further participation through an upcoming event: Climate & Health: Impacts, Solutions & Action, featuring Dr. Joëlle Gergis, on 29 April at the Tweed Heads South Community Centre.
