LEXUS GS 2012 – 2020

Lexus GS is an upmarket Japanese sedan. In what was a bold marketing move it’s aimed at Australian buyers who had previously bought sedans from Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes.

In this Used Car Checkout  we look at the fourth generation  Lexus GS models that went on sale here midway through 2012.

Build quality of the Lexus GS is high, even better than the already very good Toyota models. This has been a strong selling point of Lexus and we have spoken to many owners of the GS and other Lexus models who praise the car for the immaculate way it’s put together outside and in.

Most Lexus GS models have rear-wheel drive. Some had all-wheel drive that was aimed at both driving in snow if you’re heading for skiing destinations. All-wheel-drive provides even better grip in models with larger engines when buyers want to hustle them along in a sporting manner. These aren’t exactly track day cars though.

The front the 2012 Lexus GS has a ‘spindle-grille’ that has a tightening of the sides of the area to create a distinctive shape that makes the mid-sized Lexus stand out from crowd.

2015 Lexus GS 200t F Sport

Interior styling of the Lexus has what reviewers called “elegant simplicity” saying it could be mistaken for an Italian machine in the way the primary instruments are large, clear and easy to read at the fastest glance.

The stitching of the leather on the dashboard adds to the Italian theme, as does the centrally mounted analog clock, a feature Maserati has used with great effect for generations.

While other carmakers have satellite navigation screens that look like an afterthought, the Lexus’s is obviously a major component in its own right. As well as being aesthetically pleasing, the central screen is well shielded from light.

Lexus GS 250 is powered by a 2.5-litre V6 petrol engine that’s a heavily revised unit from the previous generation. It produces more power and torque (154 kW / 253 Nm) than previously, but the official fuel consumption was significantly reduced.

The GS 200t (’t’ for turbocharged) replaced GS 250 early in 2016 and is aimed at buyers who wanted plenty of grunt.

The 3.5-litre in the GS 350, (233 kW / 378 Nm) has sporting flair that made it much nicer to sit behind than the 2.5.

2016 Lexus GS F

Lexus GS 300h uses hybrid technology combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder Atkinson Cycle petrol engine with a 650-volt permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor to provide a combined power output of up to 164 kW.

Rear seat legroom in the earlier Lexus GS models was a cramped, but the later models being reviewed here are significantly better. Try for yourself if there are likely to be tall travellers in the seat behind a lanky driver who likes to straight-arm the steering wheel. Boot size is good and it’s reasonably easy to load.

As with other marques dealers are predominantly in the major capitals and the Gold Coast. There’s quite good coverage in country cities and some senior Toyota mechanics have been trained to help out Lexus owners in emergencies.

Spare parts prices and servicing costs are about average for a car in this upmarket class and we haven’t had any complaints of availability of parts.

Insurance charges are moderate for a car in this class as most owners use their Lexus GS as comfortable cruisers rather than full-on sports sedans. Check with several insurance companies on price, but keep in mind that switching from you current insurer may not stand you in good stead if there’s a somewhat marginal claim in the future.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Before saying you are interested in buying the car take a full walk around it to check for any damage to the body, no matter how minor it is. Check the interior trim as well.

Have a full pre-purchase inspection before you commit to the car. A Lexus trained mechanic is best, some senior Toyota mechanics are trained on Lexus. Or arrange to have a senior inspector from your local motoring association do the work.

Test each of the functions on the stereo, electric seats, climate-control, windows, doors and so on. The owner’s handbook is an excellent guide as to what all the controls do. Be suspicious if anything doesn’t work to perfection because these are quality cars.

Make sure the engine starts virtually instantaneously.

The transmission should change ratios almost imperceptibly in any upmarket Lexus. If it doesn’t there may be problems.

During your test drive listen for unusual noises and look for the slightest sign of anything out of the ordinary.

Repairs will be expensive so get a quote for even the most minor defects. Better still ensure the seller has the car repaired before you buy it.

Expect to pay from $12,000 to $18,000 for a 2012 Lexus GS250 F Sport; $16,000 to $23,000 for a 2014 GS250 F Sport; $18,000 to $25,000 for a 2014 GS300h; $23,000 to $31,00 for a 2015 GS200t Luxury; $26,00 to $35,000 for a 2017 GS300 Luxury; $30,000 to $41,000 for a 2015 GS450h; $34,000 to $45,000 for a 2019 GS300 Luxury; $43,000 to $58,00 for a 2018 GS450h; and $56,000 to $75,000 for a 2020 GS450h.

Now, Toyota appears ready to resurrect the legendary nameplate with a modern, technology-forward interpretation of the sports coupe.

A Hybrid Powertrain for the Future

Leaked information suggests that the new Celica will feature a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine paired with an electric motor, creating a high-performance hybrid. The 2025 Toyota LandCruiser Prado has received its first major modification package courtesy of Arctic Trucks, the renowned custom engineering firm specialising in rugged, go-anywhere vehicles. Known for their expertise in creating ultra-capable off-road machines, Arctic Trucks has developed the AT37 package—a combination of performance enhancements and aggressive styling tweaks.

Built for the Toughest Terrain

Headquartered in the United Kingdom, Arctic Trucks has designed the AT37 with input from its UK and Iceland development centres, collaborating closely with Toyota South Africa. This comprehensive upgrade enhances both the Prado’s aesthetics and off-road prowess, pushing its already formidable capabilities even further.

Toyota remains tight-lipped about the next-generation HiLux, but mounting evidence suggests the 2026 model will be a heavily updated version of the current ute rather than a ground-up redesign.

While speculation has swirled about an all-new HiLux, recent spy photos confirm what many suspected—Toyota is taking an evolutionary approach rather than a revolutionary one. Expect a refreshed front and rear design, possible interior tweaks, and carry-over underpinnings that maintain the ute’s proven off-road capability.

What Toyota Has (and Hasn’t) Said

Toyota’s reputation for secrecy means official details remain scarce. However, Toyota Australia’s sales and marketing boss, Sean Hanley, hinted that while the next-generation HiLux is on the way, it won’t stray from the formula that has made it a best-seller.

“I think the new HiLux will need to meet criteria of capability—particularly off-road—reliability, and affordability. And whatever we do with HiLux, that will be our first goal,” Hanley stated at a media event in early January.

When pressed on the timing of the new model, he added:

“I always laugh when journalists ask me, ‘When’s the new one coming?’ You know the day we launch a car, we start planning a new one.”

His remarks came just days before spy photos surfaced, showing what appears to be a facelifted version of today’s HiLux, rather than a completely new platform.

By retaining its existing underpinnings, Toyota ensures the 2026 HiLux will deliver similar off-road performance to today’s model. This strategy aligns with earlier reports from South America, which first suggested the 2026 HiLux would be an evolutionary upgrade rather than a ground-up overhaul. The move also reflects Toyota’s cautious, reliability-first approach—prioritising durability over rapid design changes.

Sony and Honda have revealed the near-production version of their first electric car under the joint-venture brand Afeela, showcasing a luxury sedan aimed at the premium market. The vehicle, unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, is set to debut in the US in mid-2026, with plans to expand to Japan later that year. Australian availability remains uncertain.

A Tech-Powered Luxury Sedan

The Afeela 1 sedan combines Honda’s car manufacturing expertise with Sony’s cutting-edge technology. Measuring 4915mm long, 1900mm wide, and 1461mm tall, it closely rivals the Tesla Model S in size and is larger than the Model 3.

Equipped with dual motors producing a combined 360kW, the car boasts 483km of estimated driving range from a 91kWh battery pack. Charging supports 150kW DC fast charging and 11kW AC, compatible with Tesla Superchargers in North America.

The Signature variant, priced at $US102,900 ($AU165,000), offers features like 21-inch alloy wheels, rear entertainment screens, a bespoke sound system, and an array of tech enhancements. An entry-level Origin model, launching in 2027, starts at $US89,900 ($AU141,000).

High-Tech Interior

Inside, dual screens span the dashboard for driving and entertainment, complemented by a voice assistant and graphics powered by Unreal Engine, widely used in video games. Infotainment includes apps like Spotify, TikTok, and Zoom, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility remain unconfirmed.

The interior prioritises sustainability, using recycled and plant-derived materials for 70% of surfaces. It offers conveniences like wireless charging, USB-C and HDMI ports, and household power outlets. A ‘media bar’ on the exterior shares information with other road users.

Performance and Safety

Powered by dual 180kW motors for all-wheel drive, the car features air suspension linked to a 3D Motion Management System, integrating motor, brake, and suspension controls for optimal comfort and handling.

Safety tech includes 800 TOPS of computing power managing 18 cameras, nine radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and lidar for adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assist.

Market Position and Competition

Priced higher than competitors like the Tesla Model S Plaid ($US94,990) and BMW i5 M60 ($US84,100), the Afeela 1 targets luxury buyers seeking advanced tech and premium design.

Pre-orders are now open for California residents, with deliveries expected to begin in mid-2026. While its pricing and market position place it among elite electric vehicles, the Afeela 1 showcases a blend of Japanese innovation and engineering, offering a glimpse into the future of high-tech mobility.
