Clocktower crowned to commemorate passing of Queen Elizabeth II
The Clocktower in the Grafton CBD was crowned this morning (14 Sept) to commemorate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II following her passing at Balmoral Castle last week.
The iconic structure on the roundabout intersection of Prince Street and Pound Street is traditionally crowned in October to mark the start of the Jacaranda Season.
However, Clarence Valley Council at the request of the Jacaranda Festival committee on Monday organised for the crown to be erected a month earlier.
“The Clarence Valley community joins the Royal Family and fellow citizens of the Commonwealth in mourning the passing of our Queen,” Mayor Ian Tiley said.
“As the longest-service monarch in British history, Her Majesty displayed unwavering dignity and devotion to her duty throughout her 70-year reign.
“The swift collaboration to organise the logistics of erecting the crown is a credit to all involved including Council staff, the Grafton Jacaranda Festival, Wicks & Parker Cranes and AS Sound Solutions.”
The crown will now remain on top of the Clocktower until the end of the Jacaranda Season. The Clocktower will be cleaned by Council this Sunday in order to ensure it is well presented when visitors come to the city for this year’s Jacaranda Festival (28 Oct – 6 Nov).
The Clarence Valley Council offices in Grafton and Maclean will be closed on Thursday 22 September 2022 in adherence with the National Day of Mourning for Queen Elizabeth II. The public holiday will coincide with the National Memorial Service to be held in Canberra.
The Day of Mourning is an additional public holiday for this year only. The NSW Government declared the public holiday under the Public Holidays At 2010.
Meanwhile Clarence Valley Council is in the process of planning a Condolence Book to send to the Royal Family. Community members will be able to sign the book at the front desk of both the Grafton and Maclean offices.
It is hoped the Condolence Book will be available to sign late next week. Keep an eye out on Council’s Facebook page or subscribe to Noticeboard for further updates.
