GOVERNMENT SHOULD BEGIN RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN TO GET MORE CONTACT TRACERS
With cases numbers continuing to grow across South West and Western Sydney, and reports that alerts and warnings about COVID-19 exposure sites are lagging by up to four days, NSW Labor has today called on the Government to begin a large scale call for contact tracers.
Contact tracers have a huge job to do to protect our community, exacerbated by the speed in which the Delta strain is moving across the Greater Sydney is exceeding current contact tracing capacity.
But we can’t be having lengthy delays from when a venue is identified as a place of concern and when the actual infected person visited the facility.
Shadow Minister for Health, Ryan Park, said our contact tracers have worked so hard but we clearly need more of them especially given the infectious nature of the Delta strain.
“As numbers continue to multiple the contact tracing lag is also growing, it is clear that additional staff are needed to carry out this critical work that helps keep our community safe.
“The Premier has repeatedly reminded us that this crisis is the scariest NSW has faced in recent memory. Through identifying people and places which have been exposed to the virus contact tracing is a foundational tool in protecting our community. Strengthening that weapon must be a priority.
“We need as many as are required. Contact tracing should not be taking 4 days. It should not be being outsourced to businesses and workplaces. Hire as many people as are needed to fix that. Sadly there are more than enough people who need the work right now.”
