Alison Stone to Champion Farmers, Resolve Land Use Conflicts, and Safeguard the Future of NSW Agriculture
The Minns Labor Government has fulfilled a key election commitment by appointing Alison Stone as New South Wales’ first statutory Agriculture Commissioner. This landmark appointment aims to future-proof the agriculture sector, ensuring NSW farmers and regional communities thrive in an evolving landscape.
The statutory Agriculture Commissioner will provide independent advice, conduct reviews, and make recommendations to the NSW Government on key agricultural matters, such as productivity, land use conflict, and food security.
Alison Stone brings over 40 years of experience in the primary industries, including 25 years as a livestock farmer and various senior roles in policy development, natural resources, disaster resilience, and land management. Her extensive experience will help her navigate the complex challenges faced by NSW’s agriculture sector while identifying growth opportunities.
Key Priorities for the Commissioner
Ms. Stone’s initial three-year term will focus on several core tasks, including:
- Developing a statewide system for mapping and defining agricultural lands, ensuring these areas are protected and sustainably managed.
- Progressing the pilot of a Farm Practices Panel to reduce conflicts between agricultural producers and neighbouring landholders.
- Providing input on critical renewable energy infrastructure projects and their impact on agricultural land.
- Coordinating efforts across Commonwealth, state, and local governments to promote a unified approach to agricultural policy.
- Collaborating with the Net Zero Commissioner to ensure land use policies balance agriculture, energy, and environmental goals.
A Voice for Farmers
Minister for Agriculture Tara Moriarty praised the appointment as a vital step toward building a stronger and more resilient agricultural sector.
“Ms. Stone’s extensive career and hands-on experience as a livestock farmer make her a respected leader in agriculture. She understands the realities of rural life and the challenges faced by farming communities, from land planning to managing natural resources,” Minister Moriarty said.
“The appointment of the first statutory Agriculture Commissioner marks an exciting new chapter for agriculture in NSW. With Alison Stone’s guidance, we’ll champion our farmers, protect valuable agricultural land, and build a sustainable future for the sector.”
A Clear Mission for Resilience and Growth
Ms. Stone expressed her enthusiasm for the role, highlighting her commitment to working alongside government, industry, and landowners.
“Agriculture is the backbone of our state, and my role is to collaborate with stakeholders to drive tangible, on-the-ground outcomes,” Ms. Stone said.
“NSW’s primary industries sector is one of the most diverse in the country. While this presents challenges, it also creates incredible opportunities for growth and innovation. Protecting agricultural land will remain a top priority, ensuring it stands alongside government priorities for renewable energy and housing.”
Broader Commitment to Regional Development
The appointment of Ms. Stone builds on the Minns Government’s broader strategy to support regional NSW and strengthen its agricultural sector. Recent initiatives include:
- $450 million Regional Development Trust Fund for sustainable and strategic investments in regional communities.
- $947 million in biosecurity protection and enforcement, safeguarding crops and livestock.
- The appointment of NSW’s first Independent Biosecurity Commissioner, Dr. Marion Healy.
A New Era for NSW Agriculture
The creation of a statutory Agriculture Commissioner reinforces the Minns Government’s commitment to ensuring NSW’s farmers have a powerful advocate in policy-making and land management. With Alison Stone at the helm, the state is set to address key challenges while unlocking new opportunities for growth and resilience in one of the country’s most vital industries.
“I’m honoured to take on this role,” Ms. Stone said. “Together, we will build a stronger, more prosperous future for agriculture in NSW.”
