Disaster Support Activated for Fifteen Northern NSW LGAs Ahead of Tropical Cyclone Alfred
The Albanese and Minns Governments have activated disaster assistance for 15 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Northern NSW as Tropical Cyclone Alfred approaches.
Natural Disaster Declaration for Affected LGAs
The NSW Government’s Natural Disaster Declaration applies to the following areas:

📍 Byron
📍 Clarence Valley
📍 Coffs Harbour
📍 Dungog
📍 Kempsey
📍 Kyogle
📍 Lismore
📍 Lord Howe Island
📍 MidCoast
📍 Nambucca Valley
📍 Port Macquarie-Hastings
📍 Richmond Valley
📍 Tweed
This support is provided under the joint Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
Available Assistance for Affected Communities
✅ Emergency Relief – Assistance for eligible residents to access emergency accommodation and essential items through evacuation or recovery centres.
✅ Household Grants – Financial aid for eligible low-income residents to replace lost essential household items and maintain a basic standard of living.
✅ Home Repair Grants – Funding for eligible low-income residents to undertake essential structural repairs to restore their homes to a safe and habitable condition.
✅ Local Government Support – Funding to assist affected councils with clean-up costs and the restoration of damaged public infrastructure.
✅ Small Business & Farming Support –
- Concessional interest rate loans for small businesses, primary producers, and non-profit organisations.
- Grants for sporting and recreation clubs to repair or replace damaged property.
- Freight subsidies for primary producers to transport livestock and fodder.
✅ Disaster Response & Recovery Support – Financial aid to emergency service organisations engaged in counter-disaster activities to keep communities safe.
Government Response & Community Preparedness
Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Jenny McAllister, acknowledged the ongoing challenges for impacted communities:
“We are activating a range of support to assist flood-impacted residents in beginning their recovery as soon as possible. As we assess the full extent of the damage, we will respond swiftly to provide the necessary support.”
She reaffirmed the Federal Government’s coordination with the NSW Government, urging residents to:
✔ Know their local risk
✔ Have a disaster plan in place
✔ Prepare their homes and properties now
NSW Minister for Emergency Services, Jihad Dib, emphasized the importance of the natural disaster declaration in unlocking critical assistance:
“We are rolling out support measures for communities likely to be impacted by Tropical Cyclone Alfred. As the situation unfolds, we will introduce further measures based on community needs.”
He praised the efforts of emergency services, including SES volunteers, who are already working to protect Northern NSW communities.
“For a region still recovering from the devastating 2022 floods, we recognize how difficult this latest disaster will be. The government is committed to supporting this resilient community through the challenges ahead.”
