For your mental health, make the small things count

As this current COVID-19 outbreak continues to evolve, Northern NSW Local Health District is reminding residents that help is available to support people’s mental and physical health during this unpredictable and challenging period.
Team Leader for the Northern NSW Local Health District Disaster Recovery Team, Steve Carrigg, has some simple tips to keep your mental health and wellbeing on track.
“With everything going on, it’s a good idea to focus on small things that you can do every day that will give you an energy boost and a sense of routine,” Mr Carrigg said.
“Some ideas to get you started are waking up every day at same time; doing exercise for 30 minutes – ideally outside if permitted; turning off the phone at meal times; doing something that is for you – like reading a favourite book, playing a game that you love, or making time for a hobby.
“It’s also important to be kind to yourself if you find you don’t have the energy to do all the things you’d usually do. We’re dealing with a lot of pressure and it’s normal for people not to feel like their usual best.”
Mr Carrigg also recommends limiting your exposure to social media and news updates.
“Try to make that a small part of your day rather than a large part,” Mr Carrigg said.
